Cyrus Hedden, age 91 years and 26 days, died of pneumonia, March 29th, at his home in Scottsburg, Oregon. He was born March 4, 1820, in Newark, N. J. .where he lived un til 2D years old, then went to Terre Haute, Ind. In 1850 he crossed the plains to California where he went into the mines. In '61 he came to Oregon, where he figures among the ablest of pioneers. Was one of the first into Coos and Curry counties and a survivor of the Indian fight at Battle Rock, now famous in the history of the county, also on Co qullle River in September '51 when hajf their munber was killed ,he tramped up the lonely beach, carry ing and dragging his wounded friend and companion, Capt. L. L. Williams, thus he reached Scottsburg, where he opened a blacksmith shop and later became a successful merchant. He turned his mercantile business over to his son, John N In 1877, who has been associated with him In busi ness ever since he was 20 years old ana who still keeps the firm name of C. Hedden. In IS 54 he was married to Margar et Sawyers, who preceded him to the Great Beyond on December, 20, 1890. Their four children aro all deceased except their son John N., above men tioned. He leaves to mourn his loss, one brother and two sisters, of Newark, N. J., and son John X., and seven grandchildren, besides a host of friends who have loved, honored and respected bim. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Scottsburg cemetery, March 31, 1911. His mound was covered with beautiful floral offerings, which bore witness of that love that had "Budded on earth to blossom in Heaven." "Gone but not forgotten; he Is with the pioneers above." Grandpa, darling, you have left us, Left us, yes, for ever more. But we know you are with Jesus On that bright and happy shore.
