After a severe arraignment of the defendant by Prosecutor Kate, tho case went to the jury at 4 o'clock this afternoon. Author Phillips Jturlod. ' NEW YORK, Jan. 25. Tho body of Phillips, tho author, who died of his wounds late last night, was taken to tho National Arts Club today. Sen ator Ueveiidgo was in charge of the removal of tho body from the hos pital to the club, tho funeral will be held in the little church near the club, but no hour has been set for the services. He will be buried in Indiana. Phillips made a brave strug gl for life, but died at 11 o'clock. The body of the man Goldsborough. who shot Phillips at the door of tho club, and afterwards suicided, was taken to Washington whore It was buried by his family. Tho police are convinced that the man wats Insane. Carnegie Talks of Canal. NEW YORK, Jan. 25. Forttilca tion of the Panama Canal will in no way be incompatible with the world wide peace agreement between the nations, according to a statement made by Andrew Carnegie today, who recently donated a ten million dollar fund toward tho abolishment of war. No nation can dispute our right to fortify the canal, said Carne gie. It would he a war project, but purely defensive, and the Panama forts would never Hre a shot unless the canal should bo endangered by an enemy, which means the enemy of other nations aa well, because an injury to the canal would injure the world's commerce.
