' AUOl'T HA1SIXG COFFEE. Thinks Uouglns County Would Pro duce a Crop. In a letter to a friend In this city R. W. Fewn, formerly of Roseburg. but at the present time residing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, states that since he has been in the famous coffee cen ter he has made a close study of the soil In that locality and that he has come to the conclusion that It is similar to Douglas county land. He says that lying several feet under the Douglas county soli Is a variety of rock known as diabase, which is exactly like the formation of the land where the greatest coffee in the world Is grown. In the tropical countries where coffee is raised to a good advantage -the weather never gets colder than 65 degrees, but it Is the opinion of Mr, Fewn that with the aid of the smudge pot, coffee could be raised in Douglas county, just as well as In Brazil. ' The temperature here is so warm that smudging would sel dom be necessary. Manv people of Roseburg will re member Mr. Fewn, who lived in this city for about two ypars several years ago. Since leaving this city he has been in charge, of the construc tion of a pipe line which, now that It Is completed is used for carry ing oil from, the Atlantic to the Pacific. After completing this work Mr. Fewn was appointed professor of geology in the- University of Sao Paulo, which situation he still holds. Mr. Fewn says that there is. about 160 square miles of land lying on all sides of Roseburg which is under- layed with diabase and that in his oninlon all of this could be utilized for coffee growing. He-Is so anxious ti learn whether or not his theory la correct that he offered to send KO.Tie or ine plants to nia inena wao VJI see what he can do with them.
