In the statement made of the ac cident ou the South Umpqua, In which the Church brothers, Mr. Colt, Carl Schwartz and Mark Alexander par ticipated, It seems that there has been a misstatement of facts. When the correct version of the afTalf came to light it appears that, Instead' of Mark acting as propeller of the craft, he wub acting In the official capacity of coxswain, and Mil ton Church acted as the oarsman. Everybody knows what a husky ath lete Milton is? The boat beinc heavily loaded, it did not act exactly as Milton expect ed It being a little hard on the bit, the ultimate result was a collision with tho coffer dnm of tint center pier of the Alexander Bridge, and only the Jamming of the boat saved the party from a swim In the raging Umpqua. Milton claims that with a little practice he will guarantee to take a party fully two thirds of the way across without an accident, providing he is allowed to use bread paddles, as he thinks he will be more efficient with the.ni than oars. If It hadn't been for the heroic efforts of laughter at our predica ment, indulged In by Gllmore and his crew, the men at work on the bridge, they might have rendered some as sistance and saved us the mortlflcn tlon of going home with wet trousers and water-logged shoes.
