A ccny of ihe Itlehmmxl Dlsnntch dnto of March 30, 1 8J H, loaned lis by A. K. Glutton, shows lis that prices now are a trifle any of what they were In thoao days,. An "p.d" In (he chtHsifJed column reads: i "For Hale Three gallons of No. 1 j country lard. Price Soii." Dough-I nuta fried In $200 lard would be a luxury that the most present day kick ere are not familiar vKh. Ah an Illustration of what the producer tfeta for his veijftjiibles we cite tin case of a city man who owns n farm and ope rat a It because he wants to Ket next to nature. On this farm he, of course, kiows potatoes. He Hold the ciop lust Mat:on for 60 rents per bushel to the local dealer. In buying potatoes for the use of his family In the city home, and living In an apartment house as counties Americans do, he bought In small quantities and paid the retailor at the rate of $2 per bushel. As a far mer this man did not Ket a hii?h price. Ah n purchaser ho paid dou ble what he should have done. That discrepancy of $1.40 represents pro fit, legitimate nnd otherwise. Lumbermen and timber owners In certain parts of the state, huvo undertaken to get the county asses sor to list their properties at 30 per rent of the valuation, Instead of at f0 per cent, as agreed upon at the recent convention of county assess ors. In one instance the assessor has signified his willingness to so assess tho property, provided that 75 per cent, of the taxpayers would signify their satisfaction with such a rate. To begin with, If the farmer . pays, taxes on actual cash values, or any per cent theieof, the lumberman and timber owner should ho assess ed exactly tho same They should not expect, nor be granted, .any fav ors not shown to every other t.ix payer. If timber hinds are only to be assesed at. 30 per cent of cash value, then give the farmer and the. city man the same rate. Tho rail way corporations and other compan ies own mltlimiH of dollars .worth of timber lands In Oreiron and Fhould not expect, the public to stind for any one-sided assessment, hut ery quarter section of such land In tho state should be religiously listed according to Its value and taxes col lert nd t hereon, regard lets of In whom the ownership mnv be vested, ri-icii v hoy. I'mlergocH Operation Without I'se of AneslheUc. DAYTON. Wash.. Feb. 21. When 17-year-old llolsey Koutz was operat ed on yesterday for a painful afflic tion of the feet and lower I hubs, he stoutly refused to tak-o anesthetic Dr. Donahoo finally agreed to uni form the tedious operation in face of this handicap The youngster was strapped on the table without remov ing his coat. , Suffering most excruciating pain, young Koutz uttered never u sound, but when the operation was over the physician look a rngged coat sleeve out of tho tad's month. He had most of tho sleeve between his teeth and It was bitten to shreds. The hoy's father stood near during the opera tion, nnd when he saw the surgeon pull the sleeve from his son's mouth, fainted away. l.ep Goodman went Over to Oak land today. How many filberts are grown In the UmpO'ia valley? Messrs J. F. llaggerty & Co., brok ers in canned goods, dried fruits, etc., of 105-107 Hudson street, New York City, In a letter to the Commercial Club, say: "We are very much Interested In filberts, which wo understand are raised In your locality. "Wo it present handle only the Im ported, but If tho Oregon nuts can at all compare to tho imported, we can do a largo business with tho same In our market. "If you could place us In touch with some growers and shippers of your section we would esteem It a favor. Thanking you in advance for your courtesy In the matter, wo beg to remain, yours very truly, "J. F, II A01SRTY & CO. COM MS HACK AT Mil. WIXKOX. Says 'He Has. n "Think" Coming on tho Proposed Assembly. i Editor News: T am sure Mr. Wtx- son. In this Instance, mistook the rattle of his tongue for a "think." Well, let that lie whatever It- may, there are thousands of good and loyal republicans who do not pro pose to longer be "buncoed" Into "think lug" they have "something" in the primary Jaw, which in fact 'hey have not. You can "buncoe" true nnd loyal republicans part of 'he time, as you have, but I. advise you to look wiso hereafter aiuUsay nothing. The republicans hnvo heretofore 'icted on the suggestion of Mr. Wix son and "censed" to' talk parlv feal ty, but if the result Is what Mr. W'ix son terms "first principles of per sonal Integrity, ""lie surely has nn other think coming. Republicans, von are wrong to depart from party 'ealty. I again refer you to the times of honest Old Abe, Suppose the standard bearers of republican principles in those timea of war. vhen Abraham Lincoln stood at the wheel of the ship of state then fac ing the stormy seas of internal strife 'Hid sectional hatred. I nsk then, what would have been the result if ve had ceased talking party fealty? 'f It was dangerous then to our wel fare to forsake party principles, It Is more so now. Abraham Lincoln ; and his followers had a "think", coming and they put It Into limited!- alo execution. Republicans , yon have always known tho necessity of adhering to your own principles and letting those of the "donkey" kind alone. They are unsafe and nncre taln. Mr. Wlxson talks of persmial in tegrity, hut we say any system con ducive to mob rule, destroys integ rity, destroys moral courage nnd de grades our splendid institutions. Any system that destroys government by majority rule and enthrones the mi nority rule in n republican form of government Is sure to bo disastrous. Hut Mr. Wlxson defies the writer o how wherein the primary law and statement (holy) No. have render ed representative government im possible. In making this statement ho defies plain knowledge. Any person of Mr. Wtxson's knowledge knows that Jonathan Hourne Is not n product of the majority, but of-inl-norlty rule; and so also does he know that George K. Chambertaln-ls a product of the same rule. Twice has this nameless machine put in tower minority nrd unrepresenta tive mon. This state Is greatly re publican and the malority rule means republican rule, and republi can principles, nnd not bourbon dem ocratic principles, it Is folly to say that wo have not the strongest men In the republican, party, for we are greatly In the majority; but the nameless machine connected up with tho primary law and the (holy) statement, and kindred fraud, has been irreslstable, and Its product, ns you well know, is the enthronement of minority rule,, nnd minority rule Is not representative. Then I ask yon, how can we secure representa tive government under the system? Again, under the machine system, the minority system, representative men are relegated to the back ground because they stand for re publican principles, nnd Infortnr ability asslied by the nameless ma chine nr" put In power in exchange for minority nnd inferior men In Iwlp themselves. U Is cither assem blies or n repeal of the primary law. t novo to me that the minority rule has net hMn enthroned. Yours for a return to snne lins of action. FOR ASSF.MRLIKS. Charles E.
