A6 Weekend of March 21-22, 2020 The Dalles Chronicle TheDallesChronicle.com American Red Cross faces severe blood shortage Nearly 2,700 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled across the country due to coronavirus concerns, resulting in some 86,000 fewer blood donations. The American Red Cross now faces a severe blood shortage due to an un- precedented number of blood drive cancellations in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Healthy individuals are needed now to donate to help patients counting on lifesaving blood. Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. As the coronavirus pan- demic has grown here in the U.S., blood drive can- cellations have grown at an alarming rate. To date, nearly 2,700 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled across the country due to con- cerns about congregating at workplaces, college campus- es and schools amidst the coronavirus outbreak. These cancellations have resulted in some 86,000 fewer blood donations. More than 80 percent of the blood the Red Cross collects comes from drives held at locations of this type. Make an appointment to donate blood now by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood. org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo de- vice. Blood donors with type O blood and platelet donors are especially needed right now. These blood drives are scheduled in the Gorge: March 24, Hood River -- 1 to 6 p.m., Oregon National Guard Armory, 12th and Belmont streets. March 25, Dufur -- 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., City of Dufur Fire Hall, 260 NE 1st St March 24, The Dalles -- 12:30 to 6:30 p.m., Ft. Dalles Readiness Center, The Dalles Community, 402 E. Scenic Drive. In the Oregon-Washington region, more than 65 blood drives have been canceled, resulting in 2,000 fewer blood donations. The Red Cross is adding appointment slots at donation centers and expanding capacity at many community blood drives across the country over the next few weeks to ensure am- ple opportunities for donors to give. Volunteer donors are the only source of blood for those in need The Red Cross expects the number of cancellations to continue to increase, which is causing heightened concern for blood collection organiza- tions and hospitals across the country. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emer- gencies, or patients suffering from cancer. “I am looking at the refrig- erator that contains only one day’s supply of blood for the hospital,” said Dr. Robertson.
