Klickitat County Sheriff hosts volunteer appreciation dinner Klickitat County Undersheriff Mike Kallio thanked Klickitat County Search and Rescue (SAR) vol- unteers at the annual appre- ciation night in Goldendale Jan. 14. Kallio and SAR Coordinator Jeff King com- mended the volunteers for their dedication and commit- ment, in a press release. In 2019, the Klickitat County SAR volunteers donated a total of 5,158 hours, including 941 hours on 15 missions, 3,655 training hours and 271 hours on preventative SAR public relations events. Kallio pledged the sheriff’s continued support for the search and rescue program. Kallio recognized the SAR members and their families, saying how much he appreci- ated their contributions and dedication to the program. Three new members were recognized with commemo- rative SAR pins, including K9 Ellie and handler Jim Jones. Recognition also went to Jeff Adams and Tom Cochrane for five years of volunteer service, and LeRoy Booth for 10 years of volunteer service. Special recognition was given to 2019 “Rookie of the Year” Chuck Pullen and “Volunteer of the Year” Leandra Paasch. The presentation cere- mony was concluded with a potluck dinner. Klickitat County SAR volunteers began the first session of their Basic Training Academy Jan. 21. Columbia Basin Care earns national achievement recognition THE DALLES, OR — Columbia Basin Care has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement from the American Health Care Association for “improving the lives of individuals they serve.” AHCA advocates for quality care and services for the frail, elderly and disabled, and is the nation’s largest association of long-term care providers. The 2020 Quality Initiative Recognition Program hon- ors care centers that achieve AHCA Quality Initiative goals. Columbia Basin Care was recognized for improving functional mobility by 75 percent among short-stay (rehab) residents, and maintaining less than 12 percent mobility decrease among long-term residents. In addition, they were also recognized for safely reduc- ing hospitalizations by at least 10 percent. In achieving the award Columbia Basin Care has demonstrated its ability to meet the rigorous demands of providing around-the- clock medical care in a com- fortable setting. The honor will be awarded in March at the American Health Care Association’s Quality Summit in Grapevine, Texas. “We’re honored with the recognition,” says Aubree Schreiner, Columbia Basin Care’s executive director. “Our team works hard to improve the lives of our residents, and we’re pleased to have this acknowledge- ment as a tangible measure of success.” Founded in 1964, Columbia Basin Care is the region’s only not-for-profit, community-owned facility for short-stay rehabilitation and long-term care. The care center is located in The Dalles, consistently earns top ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and ranks as a “Best Nursing Home” according to U.S. News & World Report. The raptors gather in numbers around The Dalles Dam on both sides of the river. The photographer counted over 40 of the large birds last weekend, counted from shore in Oregon and Washington. The Klickitat River west of The Dalles is also a popular gathering spot.
