Weekend of January 18-19, 2020 A7 The Dalles Chronicle TheDallesChronicle.com OBITUARIES DEATHS James Ray “Jim” Frankfother March 21, 1930 ~ January 4, 2020 Jim was born in Semi- nole, Okla., and spent his early youth there. He was a part of the great Ameri- can migration, during the dust bowl years; to Califor- nia. In 1945 he and his fam- ily moved to the Hood River valley area, where he remained the rest of his life with the exception of his military service. Jim enlisted in the Army and served courageously in Korea, where the extreme cold left him with per- manent injury. Upon returning home from the war Jim met and married his love, Doris Van Alstine. They lived in Hood River and White Salmon where Jim worked in the timber industry. While Jim and Doris had no off- spring, they were the doting parents of a series of poodles, which brought them many hours of delight. Jim was a true outdoorsman and loved nothing better than hunting and fishing. He was also a great fan of country music, cowboy boots and western movies. In his later years Jim developed dementia and lived at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, where he had a reputation for being gentle, good natured, and positive. The family sends special thanks to all his de- voted caregivers at OVH. Jim was preceded in death by his, wife Doris Van Alstine, his parents David and Kathrin Frankfother, his brother Don Frankfother, and his sister Kay Keyser. He leaves behind his brother Burt Loyd, (Kim) and numerous nieces and nephews. Though no services are planned at this time, Jim will be buried alongside Doris and his brother Don at Pine Grove cemetery near Dee Oregon. ACUPUNCTURE Roger Immanuel Person May 11, 1941 ~ December 11, 2020 Roger Immanuel Person passed away unexpectedly at Mid-Columbia Medical Center on December 11, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Roger was 78 years old. On May 11, 1941 Royal and Borghild (Bjorngjeld) Person welcomed Roger into the world in Powers Lake, N.D. Roger would later be joined by two younger siblings Bruce Person and Dale Person. Roger was a true patriot and loved his country very much. In 1960 at the age of 19, Roger enlisted in the United States Navy where he worked as an engineer and served two tours in Vietnam delivering much needed supplies to Ameri- can troops. Roger seldom spoke of his time in the service, however on occa- sion he would share a cou- ple of his harrowing expe- riences, but only when asked. One of those expe- riences included the test- ing of atomic weapons. As Roger recounted, he was serving on an aircraft car- rier in the Pacific Ocean. Once they arrived to their destination, a smaller craft was dispatched to a small atoll where they pre- pared for the test. Once the men returned and were back on board, the carrier relocated a safe distance from the atoll and the weapon was detonated. Roger would speak of how the ensuing shock wave was so intense, it physical- ly rolled the ship to one side and then the other as the wall of sound rolled out and then back in. To hear him describe the image of the mushroom cloud would cause the hair on your arms to raise. In 1964 Roger met the love of his life Mary (Mason). Following a short courtship, the two mar- ried on September 28, 1964 in Bismark, N. D. The Dalles is where Roger and Mary raised their two children Michael & Crystal as well as taking in countless foster chil- dren over many years, giv- ing them a stable, loving home. Indeed, many for- mer foster children con- tinued to call Roger and Mary “Dad and Mom” even though they had long since left the Person home. Roger retired from the Army Corps of Engineers in 1995 at age 54. In retire- ment, Roger enjoyed trav- elling, wood working and above all else, time with friends and family. Roger was a man of deep and abiding faith, which he and Mary passed down to their two children and ultimately to the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
