Julian Santiago Torres The first baby born in The Dalles in the new year is Julian Santiago Torres, who was born at 12:24 p.m. Jan. 1 to Vanessa Torres Zuñiga and Marcos Santiago Santos. He weighed 7 pounds, 9.9 ounces and was 20 inches long. Julian went home with a blanket reading “welcome first baby of 2020” and a gift basket of items collected by Mid-Columbia Medical Center (MCMC) staff to welcome him as the first baby of the year. He was born at the First Impressions Birthing Center at MCMC. Show raises funds for community concerts Gibson ■ By The Mark Dalles Chronicle Six local dancers, three men and three women, will compete to reign supreme in the Gorge as “Dancing with the Gorge Stars” takes the stage at The Dalles High School 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10. Tickets for the popular show, which features Utah Ballroom Dancing Company professionals paired with local contestants, are $20 prepaid or $25 at the door. Advance tickets are avail- able at Klindt’s Booksellers and The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce office, or call 541- 298-4352 or 541-386-3055. More information also available at www. mccca.info. In addition to the dance contes- tants, who include Laura Johnson, Mimi McDonell and Mary Davis on the women’s side and Scott Stephenson, Brian Lauterbach and Tyler Beane Kelly on the men’s, this year’s show will open with a group of young dancers, as well as a dance featuring prior contes- tants, said event organizer Patti Blagg. Fourteen kids, ages 11 to 16, will open the show, Blagg said. Over the See STARS, page A4 Chamber to honor ‘outstanding citizens’ “Visionaries of Our Time” is the theme for the 2020 Distinguished Citizens Awards Banquet present- ed by The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Fort Dalles Readiness Center, 400 East Scenic Drive, The Dalles. Tickets are currently on sale for the annual banquet, which is held each year in January. The gala event features an evening of remembering the previous year’s accomplishments, honoring those who helped make them a reality, and highlighting the coming year’s priorities and goals. In 2019 almost 350 community, county and state leaders, as well as business representatives, attended the event. The evening features a full meal, raffle and presentation of the “Outstanding Citizens of the Year” awards. Local businesses can show- case their products and services by donating raffle items for the banquet’s “Sunsational Raffle.” Those who donate are listed in the program, slideshow, newsletter and more.
