J. — A thousand striking laborers stormed the plant of the American Smelting & Refining; eompuuy here and were fired on by deputy sher iff’s. One striker was killed iiml three others were wounded. The mail killed was shot twiee through the neek. Those injured are in a eritieal condition. The strikers succeeded in setting fire to the fence surrounding the works before they were driven hack. A fter retreating out of range they held parley, and the strike leaders declared they would make another charge ami get in side of the works, even at the cost o f more lives. Sheriff Bollschweiller immedi ately took steps to swear in 400 additional deputies, and said he would refrain as long as possible from calling on the militia. Governor Wilson notified the sheriff that an adequate guard of militiamen would he sent if the sheriff deemed it expedient. The rattle of revolver shots sent over the heads of rioters as they stormed the plants, hurling stones, kept residents of the city awake most o f last night. Brigadier-Gen eral D. J. Collins, in command of the National Guard o f New Jersey, was sj ill on the scene. The strike is a peculiar one, in volving. as it docs, no particular craft, but being made up variously o f laborers o f the American Smelt ing & Refining company, section hands from the northeastern divi sion o f the Lehigh Valley Rail road, men, women and girl em ployes o f the Berth Amboy To bacco company, laborers of the Barber Asphalt company and other minor plants. The Rotary club roundly scored the Mayor for failure to sell the $75.000 municipal garbage collec tion bonds voted by the people at the last general election. That the Mayor is attempting to evade obeying the will of the peo ple and full understanding of the situation should lie obtained so that legal steps can be taken by the club to compel him to do his duty in this regard was the sub stance of a motion made by R. W. Raymond and unanimously adopted by the club. Dr. George B. Van Waters, chairman of the day, declared that, the need for change was an exi gency. that the present system per mits “ indecencies in our munici pal housekeeping that should not lie tolerated.” Another motion was as unani mously adopted calling upon the city officials to enforce the ordi nance requiring that garbage carts lie tightly covered. The Mayor was not present to answer his critics, lie had been detained by a grand jury investi gation. He sent E. T. Misehe, su perintendent of parks, to repre sent him. Mr. Misehe was not fa miliar enough with the situation to answer the questions asked of him, hut promised that the Mayor will appear in person before the eluli a week hence. He stated that one feature governing the Mayor’s attitude is his desire to develop Ross Island as a garbage crema tory site and as a park, and that he does not desire to sell the gar bage bonds until this plan has been approved by a vote in the Novem ber election. This statement was answered liy the assertion that it will require five years to develop tile Ross Island plan with the nec essary bridge connection, and that it furnishes no reason for delay ing tile sale o f garbage bonds.
