S d ite COOT FRED LEAD TO WIN OVER KENNEDY Arthur Fred sparked Chemawa to an 80-74 Tri-River Conference boys basketball upset Feb. 7 over Kennedy, scoring six points in overtime. Fred, who finished with 18 points, scored the first field goal in OT. Che mawa then went into a four-corners delay, and .clinched the victory by mak ing free throws. Alden Kickingwoman scored 4 of his 18 points in OT. Leonard Lawrence had 20 points and 16 rebounds for Chemawa, 5-6 in league. Kennedy, 7-5, forced the OT on John Farrell’s two free throws with six sec onds left. Farrell scored 22 points. J.V. BASKETBALL Chemawa JV’s went against the Santiam Wolverines on January 9th at the Santiam gym. At first half end, Chemawa trailed by two points, with score at 21-19. During the third quarter, Chemawa rallied, and by game’s end, outstripped Santiam by six points with scores of 51-45 Leading scorers were Richard Tarness 12, Tracey Jackson 10, and Myron Bone- shirt 8. Good going, team !!! L.H. CHEMAWA - MACLAREN J.V. Chemawa JV ’s handed Mac Laren a whopping defeat on January 27th here and stacked up a 9-1 record for the season thus far with a score of 76-40 High scorers were Clayton Whitegrass with 12 points, Tracey Jackson 10, Lennie Van Pelt 10, and Richard Tarness 10. 9th Basketball Team After an intial defeat (60-41) in a game against St. Paul, the Chemawa 9th team have had a series of rousing vic tories as follows: Chemawa J.V. team tangled with Mt. Angel Kennedy there on January 13- and won. Score 77-69. Our team jumped off to an early lead and held on. Good offensive moves were made by Faron Whitegrass with 20 points and Richard Tarness with 14. Tom Morceau con tributed nine points. About fifty rooters accompanied the team. CHEMAWA-SCIO J.V .’S Chemawa and Scio JV’S went at it on January 16 there, and Chemawa suffered the first loss of the year. Score Scio 47, Chemawa 46. St. Paul 39 Weaknesses in both offensive and defensive play were experienced. Faron Sheridan 33 Whitegrass stacked up 17 points and Tracey Jackson 12. Kennedy 31 Chemawa 69 The Boy’s Varsity Basketball team played an away game against Colton on January 20, at 8 p.m. There were approximately 35 rooters, but even with their cheers, Chemawa lost after four of the five starters fouled out. The leading scorers were Alden Kicking woman with 17 points, Stacy Fisher with 11, and Coot Fred and Kevin Nickols each with 10. According to Coach Ed John, it was a close game. The Braves had a six point lead, but ended up losing by two leaving the final score Colton 73 and Chemawa 71. Better luck next time boys! The 60 rooters whooped it up and the teram put out speed, accuracy, and muscle to down Colton. Score 57-46. An early lead was maintained, the game looking good for Chemawa throughout. This is the sixth win of the season for the JV’s. High scorers were Faron Whitgrass 20, Clayton Whitegrass 11, and Tracey Jackson, 10.
