The Chemawa American Page 4 BRAVES SECOND AT MACLAREN Chemawa’s Braves are off to a 4--1 start for the young basketball season and have grabbed off a second place in the MacLaren Tournament. Three Braves--Marvin Devereaux, Gary Brown and Robin Matt were named to first team All-Stars for the tournament. Devereaux was named most valuable player for the tourna ment. He scored 101 points in three games-36, 31 and 34 against Jewell, Sacred Heart and Gaston respect ively. Rebounding probable helped Garv GIRLS BASKETBALL Brown make the All-Star team. He had a game high of 19 rebounds. Robin Matt used his defensive skills and quick hands to steal the ball and make the team. So far the Braves have stopped MacLaren twice, 35-30 and 53-37. Chemawa has also beat Jewell. 68-34, and Sacred Heart, 69-46. The Brave’s only loss has been to Gaston. 59—48. Results for games played to date: Chemawa-35, MacLaren-30. Individual Chemawa -Scoring: Devereaux-34, Brown-3, M att-6, Pubigee-1, Andy-2 and McDonald-2. Girls basketball has a new coach this year, his name is Gene Merwin. So far the girls are looking good, they hope to win quite a few of their games. The starting five for Varsity are Debbie Jane, Leeda Yallup, Arkie Adolph, Hazel Noyes, and Peggy. Simpson. Other Varsity members are Juanita Reyes, Rosetta Yallup. Denise Jane, Julie Patkotak. and Mary Bush. The girls lost their first game to North Marion by the score Chemawa -45, North Marion-53. But they made a come back in their next game to beat Sacred Heart 43-27. J Vs are doing well with team members Debbie Jim, Tonea Ballard. Evelyn Small, Susie Yupe, Mary Bush. Denise Jane. Georgina Wahtomy. Gail Slockish. Rosetta Yallup, and Shirley Elwell. JVs have won two games: Che- mawa-40. North M arion-14. and Chemawa—36. Sacred' H e a rt-16.
