Student of the Month Zapped
The Chemawa American does not
carry a story on the Student of the
Month for December because there
was none. The reason for this is
that nobody took the time to hand in a
nomination. Jan et G riest was the
only nominee for November.
Are there so few students worthy
of honor around here that the award
has to go vacant? We don’t think so.
T eachers—you m ust have students
who deserve such a nomination.
Turn them in to Mr. M arshall’s office.
Students--you must know friends who
deserve to be nominated.
T ell a
teacher (or two) about it and get
them to make some nom inations.
We can make this award a meaning­
ful honor that winners will be proud
to claim, but only if we take it seri­
ously enough to make thoughtful,
accurate and timely nom inations.
New Cottuye System S tudied
R epresentatives from the Payne,
S ettecase & Smith architectural firm
Area Education Director Dr. Leroy
Stern, Mrs. Veronica Taylor from the
Advisory School Board and Chemawa
Superintendent Mr. Ed Lonefight have
traveled to R iverside and Stewart
Indian Schools to gather ideas for
the new school at Chemawa.
The architectural firm has now
completed the preliminary design for
the new campus.

they have now is the design for a
cottage or village concept of housing.

I wish to take this opportunity to wish
the parents, students and staff a Merry
Christmas and prosperous New Year.
Since my arrival I have observed that
the students and staff have been very
friendly, helpful and courteous to me and
I am grateful.
Additionally, I have observed that we
offer many viable programs for our stu­
dents. Students, please take advantage
of these various activities designed for
your growth as a student
One of my primary concerns is to set a
proper teacher-student relationship so
that optimum learning can take place and,
also, to expand the concept of individual­
ized instruction to help the student pro­
gress at his or her own rate of learning.
We have a 3-week vacation for Christ­
mas. I hope it provides some time for
relaxation and also time to reflect on
some of your past achievements.
To the Parents: If you happen to be
on the campus, please stop by my office
for a visit. I would like to meet you and
get to know you.

The deadline for this preliminary
design was December 27 at the B.I.A.
Central office in Albuquerque, New
Mexico.
The Albuquerque Central
Office will now set up a meeting with
Payne, S ettecase & Smith, the Che­
mawa Advisory School Board and the
school adm inistration to review the
preliminary design.
The next phase following the pre­
liminary design will be the design
development, which essen tially is
drawing each piece of equipment and
furniture for each area allotted.
Lonefight said, “ So far I have met
with the various tribal members of
the Northwest, explaining our various
programs here at Chemawa. Also, I
have requested their support in our
efforts for a new Chemawa. I have

received by the Northwest people,
and I have talked to them and we
have a solid support.’’

My will? Good Grief! I’m not ready
to die yet!
No, but you are getting ready to
graduate. It’s not quite the same
thing, but we do want you to leave a
will behind so that we can run it in
our graduation issu e . We ran them two
years
ago, and everyone seemed to
like them.
L a st year no one got
around to doing them.
We know this won’t happen with the
class of ’74, right? Ernie Wheeler,
our tire le s s , crusading senior reporter
is in charge of collecting and typing
them up. So think of something funny
or serious (but p lease keep it clean)
and write it down for us.

Student Council
President
Wishing you all a Happy New Year and
a new page to our future, I hope you all
had a Merry Christmas too.
We, the Student Council, have con­
tinually prepared weekly activities for
Chemawa’s student body, hopefully for
them to enjoy.
At the beginning of the school year
the Student Council set forth the major
goals which we intended to accomplish.
Projects which seem worthwhile and con­
tributing should be encouraged. It seems
that there are many students and some
teachers and staff who do not really
understand what function the student
activity program should perform.
It should be kept in mind that the
Student Council always works “ in con­
cert” with students, with faculty and
with the community. The Student Council
is not a “ telling” group.
The Student Council sets the pace,
provides the example, registers approval
or disapproval, and always respects the
dignity of every individual.
It sometimes seems like many students
have forgotten about learning as a
reason for being in school. Learning is
an everyday sacrifice for a grade or a
test score or a credit or a diploma.
What are we planning for the future?

going with other columns by other mem­
bers of the council. I f you have a ques­
