2 Chemawa American E d ito ria l S e c tio n Im p o rta n t M e e tin g s H e ld Mr. J. W. “ Choctaw” Smith, Prin cipal, called the juniors and seniors to a meeting in the auditorium Sep tember 24. Smith started the meeting by welcoming old and new students. He said that he would like to see every senior at Chemawa go home with a diploma. Then he introduced Mr. Steve LaBuff, head of the Chemawa Al cohol Education Center. LaBuff said that there had been 44 drinking incidents during the first few weeks of school, and that 25 out of the 44 were by girls! He said that there would be counselors in the dorms to work with students who are involved in drinking incidents. (Mr. LaBuff, by the way, is an ex-alcoholic, so take his word on alcoholism!) LaBuff then introduced Mr. Leon ard Tomaskin, a Yakima Indian and the treasurer for the Chemawa Ad visory School Board. Mr. Tomaskin spoke about his worry over the al cohol that had been on campus during the first weeks of school. He re ferred to the students as young adults and said that they should act with more responsibility. He told the juniors and seniors that they should be better models for the freshmen and sophomores. “ Everyone at Chemawa should try to be a big success in life,” he said. “ Education is a very impor tant standard in life to each and every one of us.” After his speech he thanked the students for their concern. On September 25, Mr. Smith called a meeting in the auditorium of all Chemawa students. Mr. Smith talked mostly about students who were cutting classes. He said that the review boards would begin working and, “ If you cut classes, you might as well be home.” N o S c h o o l P rid e Have you ever thought of how our campus would look if it were cleaned up instead of always having a bunch of junk lying all over the lawns. Do we realize how many people who go by in their cars look at our clean (???) campus? Have we wondered what they think of Indians as they pass by in their cars. We think the students of Chemawa should participate more in helping to keep Chemawa a better and clean er campus. L et’s try if we can to use the garbage cans. It just takes a few steps over there and back. Just a little bit of help from every body makes our enviroment look a lot better and gets rid of a lot of the mess. Selling the pop bottles and carefully depositing the “ unreturn- ables” in the garbage would be a good start. Remember, we have a name to live up to. This is our home away from home. We are Indians and Indians are pretty clean and neat, right? Don’t give others the idea that we are “ dirty savages.” Chemawa is our home, so let’s get it on and keep it neat. l Council Notes • by L y n n M ille r A . S. C . S ecretary During the first few weeks your Student Council officers, Roger Adams, Andrew Tooyak, Lynn Miller and Linda Jane have been busily preparing for the 1973-74 school year. They have been busy selling year books and activity cards. The Stu dent Council is responsible for week end activities and taking care of student business. The Council works with the Stu dent Center and the Chemawa Alco hol Education Center. They are also responsible for the yearbook, setting up the contract and furnishing the money for picture processing. Student Council meetings will be held once a week after school on Mondays. Not all the representatives have yet been elected. The entire Council consists of the four execu tive officers and one represen tative from each of the dorms and the four classes. Each of the clubs on campus also has a representative. Once these representatives are ejected, the Student Council will be in full swing. The Student Constitution states that the Executive Officers shall be installed in front of the student body. They shall be installed by the superintendent, or in his absence by the principal.
