Georgianne Charles and Richard
Johnson won the offices of Student
Council President and Vice-President
for 1972-73. Georgianne, President,
and Richard, Vice-President, were on
opposing slates during the election.
Georgianne’s running mate was
Loretta Samuels, who lost to Richard.
Running with Richard was Fred Sweo-
wat, who lost to Georgianne.
Grace Nichols and Jacob Merculief
won the offices of Secretary and
Treasurer.
Voting took place April 27. The
students voted in the dorm before bed-
check.
Students living off campus
voted during the day in Mr. Gillespie’s
room.
“ I was really surprised to be
elected,” Georgianne said, ‘‘because
of the hard competition I was up
against. I’m going to do my best for
the students and the school.”

Tonto' Visits
Anna Willi s and Jacob Merculief
are now back from Phoenix Indian
School in Arizona, where they were
exchange students for the third quar­
ter of the school year.
Anna and Jacob both enjoyed their
stay. Anna said, “ It was a rewarding
experience for me and I think they
should continue the student exchange
program.”
About 600 to 700 students attend
Phoenix Indian School, and they also
had other exchange students from pub­
lic schools as far away as California,
Massachusetts and Illinois.

The Student Council held a banquet
on March 29.
The guest speaker for the banquet
was last year’s student council presi­
dent, Percy Frisby. Percy now attends
Oregon College of Education in Mon­
mouth.
Percy addressed advice to all stu­
dents who are planning to go on to
college after graduation.
“ Don’t
think you have it made. It’s really
tough being out of high school and
jumping into college. The whole sys­
tem is different. You have to adjust.
If you don’t, you flunk out. If you
don’t get good study napits now in
high school, in college you won’t
make it. Just study and work hard.
Use all good habits. ”

Noted actor Jay Silverheels signs auto­
graphs for Vivian Tomaskin, Karen Obi
and Bobby Tomaskin.
Mr. Silverheels
also spoke at an assembly.
Chemawa had a surprise guest on
March 24. Mr. Jay Silverheels, who
played Tonto on the old Lone Ranger
television series, was on campus
attending a meeting of the American
Indian Commission on Alcohol and
Drug Abuse.
Mr. Silverheels and other members
of this commission met for two days
at the C.A.E.C. and discussed the
alcohol and drug problem among the
Indians. On the 24th they gave an
assembly for the students concerning
drugs and alcohol and how they can
ruin a person’s life.
Air. Silverheels is a fullblooded
Mohawk Indian from the Six Nations
Indian reserve near Brantford in Onta­
rio, Canada. He is fifty years of age
and has been an actor since he began
his career in 1946.
When asked what he thought of
Chemawa, he replied, “ I like it. I
think it’s a very good place from what
I’ve seen of it. The students here
give me the impression that they are
of the opinion that the school is good
for the Indian students here.”

Anew dining schedule for weekends
has been developed by the Student
Council as a pilot program for Chema­
wa students.
Brunch will be served in the dining
hall from eight to ten on Saturday and
Sunday mornings. Lunch will follow
at noon. Evening meals will still be
served at the regular time.
Each weekend the menus for brunch
and lunch are distributed to each of
the dormitories.
