George Paniego and Anna Willis are in the back seat, while Shirley Vanderpool, Home coming Queen, and Fred Kirstetter, Homecoming King, ride on top. The brisk autumn air chilled everyone who went to the Thurs day night Bonfire, but they were soon warmed up by the huge b la z ing flam es. Everyone gathered around the fire, which was burning in back of the school store. The Master of Ceremonies gave the floor to Mr. Louis, who gave the Cross-Country team a pep talk and told about the State meet. Mr. Vogler then introduced the football players and the crowd cheered, hoping for the b e st in Friday’s Homecoming gam e. The Bonfire was highlighted by the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. Receiving the most votes were Shirley Vander pool and F red K irsteatter. As the flames slowly grew dim mer, the crowd grew sm aller, until soon everyone was in their dorm talking about Homecoming Day. Friday, November 7, Homecom ing started with the traditional parade, made up of approximately fifteen entries from various clubs, do rm s/an d c la sse s. The parade wound around campus adding ex- .citement and color to the day. Each entry selected its own theme and was judged on originality and how well they followed the theme. The Ag-Science Club won the float trophy with the theme “ Mow Those Huskies Down’’. The float showed a North Marion Huskie being “ mowed down’’ with a lawn mower pushed by a Chemawa Brave. Ag. Club took the indivi dual award with a clever entry featuring an Indian pony and tra- vois. The Indian Club won the Marching Unit section with their colorful costumes and skillful dancing. There were so many excellent entries, the judges decided to award a “ runner-up’’ trophy to McNary Hall for their float entitled “ United We Stand” . Featured was the native housing of. the various Indian groups represented at Chemawa. After th e parade students ate 1969 lunch and then returned to see the Pep Rally conducted by the Cheer leaders. Here they led the stu dents in some yells and presented some very funny skits. The Rally Squad then added their own touch to Homecoming by selecting Mr. Vogler as the Staff Homecom ing King. The students, now filled with much spirit, headed for the foot ball field to cheer on the Braves. Although the score was not very pleasant for Chemawa rooters, the team put forth a real effort to win the la s t game. D espite the disappointment of the game, many students turned out for the Homecoming dance that evening in the gym. Decorations of yellow, blue and white covered the ceiling and the w alls, adding to the festive spirit of the day s’ happenings. Music was provided by the Meteors, performing for the first time on campus. The band members are Phillip Lestinkoff, Carlson Kaywkuk, Lynn Jackson, Burt Merculief, and B ass Gordon.
