THE CHEMAWA AMERIGAN Graduating Senior Learns Scuba Diving Scuba diving is proving to fee a very enjoyable pastim e for one Chemawa student. Delbert Kelley enrolled in a scuba diving class taught Tuesday evenings at the YWCA. The instru cto r was Mr. Dick West, a diver of the Salem Aqua Club. The students m et from 6 to 10 p.m. for seven w eeks.T w o hours were spent in classwork and two in the pool. The class curriculum consisted of studying the funda mentals of diving, underw ater tech niques, underw ater illnesses, iden tification of harm ful sea life, and many other related things., The pool workouts involved such interesting things as tube rescue, survival swimming, learning to utilize the different types of scuba diving gear, and practicing the skills th at a scuba diver has to make use of. Delbert took his checkout dive on a cold, windy, rainy day at Yaquina Bay, Newport, Oregon. The checkout dive was designed to show the instructor how well the students perform in an open dive. Upon completion of the course, Delbert received an arm patch, diver’s certificate, and a registra tion card from the National Associ ation of Underwater Instructors, to show th at he had passed the course. Deciding now will make it easier for you to plan ahead and help you to train for a certain vocation or to go on to college. Choose and work toward your goal. Your efforts will determ ine your chances and will decide what you make of your life. Aloysious Wasuli 3 Student Impressions O f Chemawa My first impression When I ar rived at Chemawa was the fact that all the students were warm and friendly. While only being here a short time I have made many friends which would have taken months in a public school. There is a great difference be tween a public school and a board ing school. At a boarding school you are under much stricter rule. Everyone works together and learns to take responsibility. Every one gets up with the sun to begin th eir daily schedule. Being at Chemawa will be a won derful experience for me. Along with all other students, I’ll learn to take responsibility, learn more about my people,/ and most im port ant get an education th at wiil open the door to my future. Helen Young
