4 CAMPUS MAP Did you have, trouble finding your way around campus when you were a new student? Chemawa now has an attractive all-weather map and bulletin board-displayed in p rus tic designed glass show case. The display case is the result of the combined efforts of the vocational shops. It is hoped that new students and visitors will make use of this map to help them find their way around campus. The bulletin board will be Used to tell of student activities on campus. LECTURER The 8th, 9th and 10th grade class es of the Homemaking Department were given the opportunity of hear ing a series of lectures by Mrs. Lucke (Avon representative). Mrs. Lucke stressed good health as the foundation of all beauty. To hear this from a lady who deals in cos metics was somewhat surprising to the girls. Mrs. Lucke stressed as her theme for the lectures that “Everyone can look neat and sweet, with a little effort but not much money.” It was established during the lec tures that genuine beauty and at tractive appearance come mainly from within, and require diligent adherence to the health rules of rest, exercise and good food. THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN Square Dancing Club Is Popular The Jr. Toastmistress Club has had a very active semester. Twelve girls attended the Salem Club Speech contest where our good friend Mrs. Strohmeyer won. Three girls attended the Area Speech Contest at the Timber Topper, and five girls attended Amanda Ander son Day where six of Miss Ander son’s winners from S. Salem Hi spoke. All girls who won best speaker of the evening, officers and many members also attended meetings with the Salem Toastmis tress Club. Money earned through sale of lapel pins, souvenirs, and cards will be used for our picnic to be held May 3rd. We will go up the Santiam to Fisherman’s Bend. We have invited our sponsors, the Sal em Toastmistress Club to share the fun with us. We hold regular meetings every two weeks. We try to give as many as possible a chance to participate each meeting through the pledge, business meeting, table topics and speakers for the evening. Special guests from the Salem Toastmis tress join; us and offer ideas for self improvement. The following girls won the best speaker of the evening trophy-O Ruth Paul, Susan Grandson, Lucille Killbear, Lily Crank, Sheila Aga and Lolita Kaye. They worked hard to earn this prize. Special guests at our picnic were Mrs. Brannon and Miss Mitchell. We would like to thank Miss Mitch ell, Mrs. Pentecost and Mrs. Mc- Nurty for the cooperation, help and understanding they have given our Club. Our girls have tried hard to deserve the trust and privileges given us. Alice Brown, Rec. Sec. PEP CLUB REWARDED Th Pep Club was treated to a skating party for its fine display of school spirit. Mr. Walters arrang ed for the 41 girls, chaperoned by Mrs. Long, to have a day of skating at the Lloyd Center. Many of the girls had never been on skates be fore. The handsome young man who was the attendant had a very busy afternoon as even the girls who could skate were “falling” for him. T h e management of the r i n k sent a letter to the school com- Square Dancers: Mrs. James Bartell, Stella Becenti, M r. Bartell, at one of our square dance sessions. A very popular activity this year has been the square dancing les sons, which were held each week in the gym. Mr. and Mrs. JameS; Bartell of Sweet Home, Oregon, generously gave of their time to come and in struct. About fifty couples includ ing several faculty couples took part in the program. We were a clumsy lot at the beginning, but with a great deal of patience on the part of the Bartells and a lot of ef fort on our part we finally reached, the place where we could do the simple maneuvers of the dance. The highlight of the season was the graduation program which was held Thursday, April 1. Each per son who had àttended regularly was presented4 with a diploma which will introduce us to square dancing clubs in Our own commun ities. The class in turn presented the Bartells with a hand tooled leather purse and matching bill fold. The gym was decorated for the occasion, with colorful Navajo blankets belonging to the students.; We shall always remember the Bartells and the great pleasure they have given us. The cheerleaders and pep club who have won the trophy at the Jamboree for the past two years are certainly to be congratulated for their fine work.
