THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN A t the D orm itories Mr. Hudson Reports to McNary Boys A McNary Hall house meeting was held January 31. Mr. E. B. Hudson, hoys’ adviser, who had just returned from his trip, told the boys some of the things he had observed at other Indian schools he had visited. Mr. Hudson said that the intra mural programs at all the schools is similar to ours at 'Chemawa. Phoenix has two basketball courts for intramural play, at each build ing. Of interest to the boys was a different system of roll call which Mr. Hudson learned about. It was explained, and may be voted upon for use in our dormitory at a later meeting. Mr. Hudson told about the cot tage system of living at Stewart. Phoenix and Sherman have dormi tory systems much like Chemawa, except that at Chemawa boys have more or less individual rooms. Welcome Home Winona Hall girls are all glad to have everyone back who has been away. All returned on Sun^ day, January 31^-i-Eleanor Rabbie and Gladys Hellon, who spent the week end at their homes, Delores Cloud, who was away for a week, and Miss Alberta Challis, girls’ adviser, who was on a trip visiting other Indian schools. When Miss Challis came in, all the girls started talking to her at once. The only comment we got was, “I lost my voice in Arizona. Sorry, I can’t talk much tonight, but it’s surely good to see all of you again!” Boy's Intramural There was little interest in intra mural basketball on the part of non-varsity players until B squad boys were permitted to play. Now enough boys for six teams turn out on; Monday nights. After some trading of places, the teams are quite evenly matched. Sundays at Winona Hall There is usually something spe cial going on at Winona Hall on Sunday evenings. On January 17, Sarah Lewis and her unit of girls of the fourth and fifth year Nava jo program, gave a clever TV per formance. Unit six, with Nettie Ra cine as councilor, gave a program on January 24. The girls thought it was very nice. On January 31, Miss Mamie. Tedlock showed three guidance films: Respect for Prop erty, Going Steady, and How Do You Know It’s Love? The girls like seeing such films. Unit Has Costume Party Band Concert A band concert was given Janu ary 14 at 3:15 p.m. in the auditor ium. It was the fifth annual con cert of the band since Mr. V. J. Matt became director. The program consisted of march es, waltzes, overtures, -etc., and a favorite of everybody, Tiger Rag. The audience enjoyed the.playing of the band, and also the twirling of the majorettes in the last num ber, M arch o f th e T ro ja n s. It got its first glimpse of the majorettes’ cute new outfits. Good Grooming Club Organized at Winona Unit two had a costume party on January 31 from three to four. Twelve of the girls invited twelve boys from McNary Hall. Games were played, and everyone had fun. At refreshment time, extra spécial sandwiches were given as prizes to Farrell Gàllineau, who came as a bearded miner, and Dorothy Har ris, who was dressed as a Chinese woman. There were several other clever costumes. Outstanding were James Switzler in pajamas, as Sleepy, and Delores Bennett in' a cowgirl outfit. A new club is starting at Winona Hall. Mrs. Mary Bartolomé is sponsoring a good grooming club. She will teach the girls to care for their hair and nails, and help them with fixing their hair. Anyone not belonging | to „ some other club may join the good grooming club. McBride House Meetings The newly organized Girls’ Ath letic Association elected officers at its first meeting held January 27. President of the organization is Willene Dumore; vice-president, Thamer Perry ; secretary, Christine Thompson ; and treasurer, Lavinia Johnson. Sergeants at arms are Leah James and Florine Hall. The purpose of the G. A. A. is to promote interest and participa tion in intramural sports. Time was taken in making up the mem bership so as to include only girls who understand the goals and are serious about trying to reach them. A system of points for sports par ticipation will be used to earn the privilege of wearing the small C and stripes on school sweaters. The club has thirty-two enthusiastic members and membership pins will soon be seen. McBride Hall has very good pro grams at their house meetings. Groups give programs of entertain ment numbers, and also skits about such things as dressing neatly and keeping clean. Some times films are shown from which the girls learn many things. On January 18, Betty Kennerly was in charge of a program given by a seventh grade group. Norma McKenzie, Priscilla Sakota, and Erma Whiz gave a skit that showed the best way to get ready in the morning. • Songs were sung by Geraldine Jones, Madeline Edmo, and Elsie Me Joe, Winona Hall councilors have been invited to McBride Hall sev eral times. Some of them have been guests at award and other parties. The older girls have helped the McBride girls with electing their house officers, and have also discussed with the McBride Hall councilors, ways to help the young er girls with their problems.
