The gym w as ap p ro p riately decor a te d tor the affair. All of the u su a l carn iv al concessions m ad e the p lace look like "the G reat W hite W ay." There w as bingo, dancing, roulette, b a h throw, food a n d drink stands. Everything w as bought w ith tickets th at w ere sold at three booths. The ninth g ra d e raffled off four cakes, It w as a very sTiccessful affair. Ev eryone- seem ed to b e enjoying them selves. CHEMAWA BENEFITS FROM STUDY GRANT the N avajo students who come to the Northw est with a sm all p e rc e n t a g e of tooth decay but develop it in their time here. The survey is Under the direction of Dr. M arshall Snyder, h e a d of b a c teriology, a n d Dr. Theodore Suher, h e a d of dentistry for children, a ssist ed b y Dr. John Dickson a n d Dr. Keith C lay comb. C h em aw a students will profit from the $12,000 g ran ted to the University of O regon b y the U. S. H ealth Serv ice, for the study of tooth decay. Six h u n d red students b e tw e e n the a g e s of 6 a n d 16 are a part- of the project to discover the relationship b e tw e e n sa liv a a n d d e c a y in the mouth. Monthly sam plings of sa liv a are taken in this extensive study. Y early clinical a n d X-Ray e x am in a tions will correlate the sa liv a study a n d d en tal health. S pecial attention is b ein g given “VARIETIES" ASSEMBLY The student body w as tre a te d to a program of exceptional talen t w hen tenth g ra d e sponsored the "V arie ties" from W illam ette University. Myrtle Peters Virginia W eigel It is with d e e p regret that we, the staff of the "C hem aw a A m erican," recall the d eath s of two former em ployees during the summer. Miss Myrtle Peters, Property Clerk, h a d b e e n a devoted m em ber of the C hem aw a adm inistrative staff for approxim ately 40 years. Q uietly Miss Peters w ent ab o u t her work, e n d e a r ing herself to all—students a n d fel low w orkers alike. Mrs. V irginia W eigel w as the former ninth g ra d e teacher. A lw ays in terested in w hat w as b e st an d p le a sa n t for the students; Mrs. Wei- gle enthusiastically a n d sincerely did those things for w hich she is rem em bered—giving a cheery smile —a g lad g reeting—pursuing the d e m ands of her position as teach er a n d . adviser. Both a re m issed b y all of us who w ere fortunate to hav e know n them a n d to hav e w orked w ith them.
