4 The Chemawa American AGED STRUCTURES RAZED SCOUTS ORGANIZE Two of Chemawa's older buildings were torn down this summer. They were the old club building and the building known originally as super intendent's dwelling and later as The Chemawa boy scout troop met in early October for their organiza tion meeting. Mr. Billy Suggs is the scoutmaster with Mr. James Short as his associate. Mr Charles Holmes works with the explorer group. George Umtuch and Kenneth Con ner, senior patrol leaders, also as sist the scoutmaster. Other scouts in the troop are Mar- "us Luke, George Super, Andrew Rabbi, Leland Jackson, Martin Sor- ondo, William Millett, Thomas Jones, Ivan Sam, Virgil Seaman, Andrew Peters, Duane Wheeler, Lafayette Jerry, Richard Henry, James Price, Tommy Sampson and Walter Mose. Saturday, October 27, Mr. Suggs, with Scouts Umtuch, Luke and Min- ninick, went on an over-night hike at the "X" Youth Camp at Silver Falls park. Contests and demonstra tions were held there. Chemawa took first in First Aid and second in the tent contest—George Umtuch. Old Land Mark Gone practice house and employees' guar tors. Yvonne LaClair, Barbara Dav ■ Rob èrta 'McDevit* Geraldine peter ar Gale Howard Eleanor Rabbi Al freda Broncho and Elouise Rutler. - Bc-Mv Conrad STATE CONVENTION Chemawa was host to the Ore gon State Federation of Federal em ployees Saturday, Oct. 29, during their annual convention. Meeting.-, were held at Kola Topee. For foo d and entertainment the group moved to the gymnasium whore a tasty banquet was provided by a Salem caterer. Music and dances given by employees and rtuden's were al: o enjoyed Seventy t' o delegates and visitors wore in attendance Mr James A McDonald was gen oral chairman and a half-dozen committees of Chemawa employees prepared and staged the convention in a very efficient manner The principal speaker was Dr Williom R. VanDersal, with the con nervation service in Portland GLAD TO HEAR FROM: John Crane, who writes for a copy of the Chemawa American. He does not tell us where he is but mentions seeing Reginald Tulee and Henry Crooked Arm in Japan. John is of the Class of '49, Reginald the Class of '47 and Henrv Glass of '48 CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS During the past summer and fall the Elementary School building has been made a more attractive place to study and much easier to clean by the installation of beautiful as phalt tile floors in all rooms, and lighted by new electric light fixtures. Also all those south windows that were formerly rickety and dangerous to try to open are replaced with nice new sash. The Intermediate School building (Navajo classrooms) also received the new modern light fixtures and asphalt tile floors. The High School building has now been rewired and new modern light fixtures as well as wa1! outlets that will work without "blowing" fuses have been installed in each room except room 8 The fixtures for this room -are on order and should be ready for installation in iho near future. The two new home economics lab oratories have just been completed. Each lab has th-ee kitchen units with built-in cabinets and an im proved sowing area. Some cabinets and other needed equipment is still to bo made in our shops. The build ing docs not lea!: any more since the new roof han been completed.. • The hallway in Brewer hall is now being repaired. The floor is repaired . where the dry rot had made it dan gerous to walk. Now the south wall a is being plastered. Then th? stair ways are to get new linoleum and stair nosing to replace the old worn- out treads CHEER LEADERS Those making their appea ance ns Cheer Leaders for Chemawa for the first time are Elouise Butler, R (Porta McDevitt, Pauline Brawn, Claudette Smith, Barbara Gibbons, Paisy Carlson, Beverly Carlson, Jean Hamlin, James Coburn and Clifford Case. With the cooperation of the Pep Club behind this aggregation they should be able to show the public the kind of school spirit that Chemawa reallv has
