COMMENCENT Commencement Week, 1949, was a memorable time in the lives of the seventeen Seniors who referred to themselves as the "Forty-niners." Commencement day was bright and sunny. Many parents and relatives came to the cam pus to witness the final pro gram. The auditorium was filled with visitors and campus folk Friday morning at 10:00 when the Seniors received their last words of advice and en couragement as Chemawa stu dents and were presented their diplomas by Supt. Kelley in an impressive ceremony. The class colors were green and gold, the motto, "Find a Way or Make One," and the class flower was the yellow rose. Caps and gowns were worn for the first time in Che- mawa's history for Commence ment. The caps and gowns were royal blue in color and the caps were adorned with a tassel of red and white, Chemawa's school colors. The "Forty-niners," an ambi tious group, plan with few ex ceptions to continue their school work Frieda Bent and Florence Ingawanup have been accept ed as commercial students at Haskell Institute; Delores Race horse will take nurse training at Kiowa Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma; Vernon Lone and Victor Jackson will attend Pa cific college at Newberg; John Crane will take auto mechanics training at Haskell; and Phyllis Miller p’ans to attend art school in Portland. Others intend either to enroll in colleges or other schools near their homes, do advanced vocational study, or do work in line with their train ina here. Class Night was held on Wednesday evening, May 4; Baccalaureate services. Sunday night, Mav 8; Awards Program. Wednesday afternoon, Mav 11; and Commencement, Friday morning, May 13.
