4 The Chemawa American COURTESY THE CAPITAL JOURNAL CHEER LEADERS AND DANCERS AT COUNTY TOURNEY. Left to right are, Ray Pete, Janice Rambeau, Phyllis Miller, Vin nie Matt, Georgianna Young (partially hidden), Larry Arthur. This group led our outstanding cheering section at the Mar ion County B Tournament, where we won runner-up honors in basketball and were tops in cheering. News Notes A letter from Philip Bull, Class of 1946, informs us that Philip is now attending Montana State college, Bozeman, Mont. This is Philip's sec ond year at college. He is majoring in animal husbandry. He writes he enjoys college life very much. Corporal William Washington was a campus visitor over the week-end. William was a member of the Class of 1950 but left to join the marines. He has just returned from 25 months of service in Japan and is now to be stationed in Seattle, Washington. The campus bridge club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Jo- hannaber, February 8. A dessert luncheon was served by the Misses Jodie and Lorna Johannaber after which bridge was played, the high prize going to Miss Alberta Challis and second high to Mrs. Mary James. NEW BOOKS IN LIBRARY The high school office has been a sub-station to the library of late. Exclamations of delight at sight of the inviting display of bright, gay, new paper covers on these books prove that Chemawa boasts many book lovers among the employees and student body. The five large boxes of books, which have been stored for some time in the office, were opened by Mr. Kelley and a staff of helpers. They contain entertainment for all who enjoy novels, biographies, auto biographies, natural science, travel tales, historical books and American and English literature in general. Helen Campbell and Phyllis Miller, assistant librarians, hope that by working overtime they will have the R. B. Library ready for customers next week. They are installing pock ets, preparing cards and classifying and numbering the books which will be placed in the sturdy 3-tiered boxes in which they arrived. Winona Items We, the girls, congratulate Unit V! and Loretta Hawk, their councillor, for winning their third hard-earned Unit Award trip. When are Unit Ilf and Unit IV going to get the oppor tunity of winning?? We hope before the year is over. Come, come girls! New attractions, added this month to Winona hall—two beautiful large mirrors, one for the living room over the piano, and one for the dinette. Also we have a floor lamp for the living room to brighten that north corner. Thanks to Miss Tedlock, the reading room has new gay flowered curtains. We purchased the material from our sandwich sale money. Helen George and her Unit III are having an invitational Unit party in the Winona hall dinette on Feb. 20. Hey! everybody! Notice the sleepy but happy girls. The reason? Be cause our high school basketball team won their second victory at the tournament, and, we our proud to say, we did our part, cheering our loudest to back up our boys.
