CHEMAWA® AMERICAN Vol. XLVIII Chemawa Indian School, Chemawa, Oregon . December, 1947 No. 2 Supt. Kelley Welcomed New Chemawa Superintendent Assumes Duties November 10 Mr. R. M. Kelley, our new superintendent, reported for duty at Chemawa on Wednesday, November 10 H- came here horn Oklahoma where he had been district supervisor of Indian education for the past nine years. Pievious to his Oklahoma assignment, he was superintendent at Haskall Institute for five years. Mr. Kelley has been busy getting acquainted with the present Chemawa program. He held the first staff mee.ing since his appointment, on Tuesday, December 9. Mr. Kelley was accompanied to Chemawa by Mrs. Kelley. Their son, Russell M. Kelley jr., is attending Oklahoma A. and M. college at Stillwater, Oklahoma. Mr. and Mrs. Kelley were guests at a reception short ly after their arrival when they were presnted to the campus people. Chemawa welcomes them most heart ily and hopes-they will like their gew home. New Employees Added to Staff RUSSELL M. KELLEY We Celebrate Christmas We celebrate December 25 for the Christ Child who was born two thousand years ago in Bethlehem of Judea. It was then the angels sang of Peace on Earth." The shepherds looked up and saw the star that hovered over the stable. The wise men followed the same star both day and night until they could present their gifts to the King. On Christmas day all over the world people will celebrate this great day by going to church and by giving gifts. Here at Chemawa the children will have one of the merriest Christmases in the history of the school. People from many sections and organizations in Oregon have brought presents for the boys and girls. All over the campus is a new spirit of happiness. We thank these kind people who are making our Christmas merry. In the words of Tiny Tim, "God bless us everyone." —Florence Ingawanup. Miss Eloise Bernal, the new member of the Chemawa hospital staff, was transferred to Chemawa from Staten Island, New York. Miss Bernal graduated from Lawton, Oklahoma, after which she served as surgical technic ian in the U. S. Army. Mr. Nobel Sanderville, new payroll clerk, who has replaced Mr. James Welch, was transferred from the agency on the Blackfoot Reservation. Mr. Sander ville is a former Chemawa student and served three years with the United States Marines in World War II. EDUCATIONAL TRIPS The juniors took and educational trip to Silver Creek Falls on November 5. The class studied many plants in the park for biology. In the interest of sociology the seniors visited Fair view Home in Salem. The group was conducted through the home by Mrs. Bristow, former girls' adviser at Chemawa. McNARY NEWS The Christmas Spirit has come to McNary hall. The boys (with few exceptions) are better than usual. Even some of the seniors are doing their share of wo-k about the dormitory. The rooms are being decorated with Christmas colors and the reading room is being read ied for our annual Christmas party to be held Tuesday evening, December 24th.
