6 THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN S PORTS W REVIEW Win Duration Meet Fritz By Spring Sports Coach Chief Thompson issued a call for track and for baseball turnouts, and the little Indians rolled out of their beds. Training began at once. Some were old-timers and some green as the grass they were practicing on, but we bet they will make good teams. Merle Williams, Calvin Picard, Gerald Hoffer, Wellington Byrd, Wally Yallup. Terry Francis and Earl Davis are back to represent us in their special skills. Besides these lettermen Chemawa has found some new talent in Bill Yallup, David Harrison, Fred Miller, Glenn Fritzler, Robert Eickmeyer, Gene Lahr, Gilbert Towner. Let's encourage these boys, students. Hopes for a good showing in the Dur ation League meets this spring have been realized, as following items will show. V i Baseball The Chemawa Indians ran. jumped, and tossed Hieir way to the Duration League track champion ship. The meet was held at Canby. The class “ B ” Indians scored 70 1-4 points against Woodburn, Canby, Molalla, and Silverton. Woodburn was the runner-up with 56 1-2, Molalla third with 56 1-4. High point man of the meet was Merle Williams with firsts in the high hurdles, pole vault, and a tie for first in the low hurdles. He also ran a leg on the winning relay team for 15 1-4 points. Che mawa got only 3 firsts and the relay win but were strong in seconds and thirds. District Meet Chemawa placed only 2 men in the state meet, Bob Eickmeyer in the mile. Merle Williams in the high hurdles and pole vault. As a team Chemawa scored 20 1-4 points to gain a fourth place. State Meet Chemawa’s high hurdler, Merle Williams, was eliminated in the preliminaries. He placed third in his heat. Eickmeyer was game in his try for the mile but was outclassed this year. He will give some good competition next year, we believe. When the call for baseball players went out six teen young bucks answered, seven of them lettermen of last year. The first game was at Molalla, and turned out to be a pitching duel. The score was tied at the end of the ninth at 3-all. In the tenth inning an error by Che mawa let Molalla score a run to win the game. Mol alla won the second by a wide margin of 12 to 3. Next the team journeyed to Silverton to play a double-header. Silverton won both games with scores of 7 to 5, and 8 to 2. The team was more fortunate at Stayton, winning by a score of 6 to 4. Other games we have lost: Woodburn 11 to 1, Mt. Angel 17 to 14, and Canby 6 to 2. Let’s hope for better luck next season. Chemawa won their first regular track and field meet at Woodburn. Although pressed all the way, Chemawa managed to eke out die win by the close score of 67-59. Salem Relays Chemawa Places Five Boxers Against such “A” competition as Salem, Grant, Oregon City, Milwaukie, Springfield, Albany, and Corvallis, Chemawa earned enough points to gain a fourth place. There were 12 schools competing. High jump relay team of Merle Williams, Gene Lahr, (Jal Picard, got a first place; also our shuttle hurdle team, Wajly Yallup, Cal Picard, Merle Wil liams, came in behind Grant for a second. Chemawa’s ' beak busters” traveled to Stayton Friday, March 26, to participate in a smoker among Turner, Stayton, Aumsville, and Chemawa. Chemawa sent five boxers, all winning by decision. Curtis Stacona, Art Johnson, Leslie Bill, Robert Satiacum, and Glenn Fritzler were opposed by D. Wagner, D. Whitey, P. Mully, D. Mac. and D Archibald respectively. Hayward Relays Chemawa entered the Annual Hayward relays at Eugene but was able to get only one first, the dis tance medley. Woodburn-Chemawa
