We Gave $887! Zhe Chemawa American The War Chest drive was a success at Chemawa. I he students of Chemawa have contributed the sum of $206.55. They have also pledged $4.50 more which has not been collected. I he girls have col lected and pledged $105.35. The boys have collected and pledged $105.70. Students went out to a neighboring farm and pick ed nuts. Fhe money they earned they donated to the drive. Some of them were very generous: six dollars was the highest paid, w hile five was not uncommon. Students who helped collect the pledges and money were: Paul Svinth, Bryson Liberty. Dick Walker, Ray Bennet. Martha Miller, Florestine Peltier, Helen Hayes, Christine Williams, and Geneva Alex. Published once a month during the school year by the Cheinawa Indian School. Printing Instructor With The Colors Ralph Summers, class of '43, is now serving in the Naw. He is located at Farragut, Idaho. Other Chemawa boys at Farragut are Matthew Stopps, Wesley Dave, Clifford McMeeL Martin Pepion is in the Navy and stationed in Hawaii. Harold Joseph, class of ‘42, is in the Army Air Corps at Sait Lake City. Cpl. Francis Cassimere is with a tank destroyer unit at Camp Hood in Texas. Francis visited Che mawa in September. Stanley Wilder is also at Camp Hood w ith a tank destroyer unit. Stanley visited his brother, Mr. War ren Wilder, recently. CpI. Cecil OHield. who is with the Air Corps at Page Field. Florida, made the long journey to Che mawa to visit friends here in September. First Lt. Milton M, James, son of Mrs. Mary James, is serving in Hawaii. Second Lt. Sam Scott, '35. is with the 104th Division, Camp Adair, Oregon. Stanley Williams, '42. is with the U. S. Army in England. Arthur Shilo, '40. according to friends, is in a German prison camp. Willard Mowitch, Seaman 2nd class, is stationed at San Diego, (.alifornia. Mr. Fred Rickard, class of '29, and former boy's adviser of Chemawa, is serving with the Marines somewhere in the South Pacific. Pvt. Walter Champine, Class of’43, is in the Army Air Corps at Buckley Field. Colorado. Pvt. Carl Wood, ( lass of'43, is w ith the Army at Camp Callan, ( alifornia. Serving w ith the Marine Corps are Tom (’arson, Edgar Sakiskin, I lenry ( xnirville and Johnny Ploufife. Fhe employees war chest drive was also very suc cessful. The quota was $500.00 for Chemawa but they went over this by S180.45 which brought the total to $680.45 for Cheinawa employees. The em- ployeees on the committee were Miss Page, Miss Chambers, Miss Rector, and Mr. Clingenpeel. We are very proud that Chemawa could donate this sum of money for such a good cause. We hope that it w ill reach some personal friend of outs, per haps overseas. Visitors Mr. R. M. Tisinger, Superintendent of Indian Education, was a visitor of Chemawa the first week in November. Mr. Tisinger lives in Phoenix, Arizo na. Mr. J. Preston Myers, Education Field Agent, Eureka Cal., visited us in early November. Mr. Myers knows many of our students. Miss Cleora Helbing. Supervisor of Indian Edu cation, Denver, Colorado, is at Chemawa this week. Mrs. Bertha Elhnger. Supervisor of Indian Edu cation is living here m Kolo Teepee. She is divid ing her time between the Siletz Agency in Salem, and Cheinawa. Mr. George La Yalta, Superintendent of Taholah, ami Mrs. LaVatta, were visiting Chemawa on No vember 2 -i> Fun and Frolic The evening of November 5 was fun for all. A carnival in the gymnasium had games of bingo, pen ny toss, ring toss, and many others. Then there was fortune telling, beauty parlor, floor prizes, and food. Tiie carnival was held as benefit for the Students’ Activity Association. Approximately $180.00 was cleared. This column will be a feature of the Chemawa American each issue.
