Summary of Sport Activities Salem Noses Out Braves When the Chemawa Indians invaded the Vikings’ Court last Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1942, they lost a hard- fought battle, 36-34. The Vikings jumped into the lead, but the Indians were never behind more than five points. Since the Indians were playing a tight defensive game, the Vikings had to shoot from way out. At the end of the first quarter the score stood 11 to 9 in favor of Salem. When the second quarter opened, the Indians started to hit the hoop to come within four points of the Vikings, when the half-time stopped the scor- >ng- In the third quarter the Indians were still going strong as ever to overtake the Vikings. With about three minutes to go the Indians forged ahead 3Ito 26, as the final count for the quarter. The last period had the fans on their toes, when the Vikings kept slicing the Indian lead to three points. With three minutes left to play the score stood 34-34. Then the Vikings scored their final two points with seconds to go. Whitford, Williams, and Edden were the stars for the Chemawa Indians. Whitford made 10 points and Williams and Edden made 8 apiece. Farlow and Sevarvared saved the game for the Vikings with long shots. Braves Nip Silverton Chemawa hung up their first league basketball game win over Silverton, Dec. 22, on the Foxes’ home floor. Silverton played a good game, but the Indians were “on” that night. The half-time score was 14-4 in Chemawa’s favor. Whitford was high-point man for the Indians with 14 points. The game was close enough to keep the spectators interested. Alumni News Stanley Williams, student body president and val edictorian of the graduating class of ’42, is in the x-ray department of an army hospital at Camp Barkely, Texas. He reports that he is thrilled to read the campus news in "The Chemawa American.” Clarence LaRoque, ’42, is working in a tailor shop in Tacoma. George Cross, class of ’ll, is employed on the Bonneville power line. Lloyd L. Brewer is serving with the U. S. Navy. Fred Motchman, ’33, is attending the officers school at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Fred hopes to com plete his training sometime this month. Items of Interest Miss Ila White was transferred to Sequoyah Indian School at Talequah Oklahoma, leaving Chemawa Dec. 28. Miss White was very well liked by both students and teachers and she will be missed at Chemawa. Miss Evelyn Ahern, who recently joined the Army Nurse Corps, has been sent overseas. At the Jan. 5th assembly, new song books which have been purchased for the whole student body, were used for the first time. These books contain a good variety of songs—old ballads, patriotic and re ligious songs. Miss Rector led the singing. We hope to learn a number of these songs and have many happy times singing together, with a much brighter spirit. Hurrah! Senior Carnival Coming! Come one, come all! Come to the Annual Senior Carnival being held at the gym. (Watch the calen dar and posters for the date.) Have a real evening of fun, then dance and eat until you’re sleepy. We guarantee you a good time at the games, fish pond, and other booths. Beautify yourself at the beauty parlor then find out what your future holds in store for you at the fortune-telling booth. So, come on, everyone! Have some real fun! Religious Education Chemawa is fortunate in having two well liked directors of religious education this year: Miss Mar garet J. Harris and Reverend Louis G. Rodakowski. Miss Harris is sent to us by the Home Mission Council of N. A. She conducts a morning church service and an evening Vespers every Sunday on the campus. She has consented to be leader of Hi-Y and Girl Reserves, groups which will be organized soon. Reverend Rodakowski, from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Salem, conducts high school classes in religion for Catholic boys and girls, on Wednesday each week. Similar classes are planned for grade school children. He holds catechism 9:30 and Mass at 10:00 a.m. every Sunday on the cam pus.
