CRUISE Printer and Manager Journalism Instructor REPORTERS—Joe Hayward. Stanley Williams, Marjorie Skahan, Margaret Skahan Editorial Why haven’t we produced a leader here at Che mawa in the recent years? Many want a sufficient answer. We haven’t produced a leader because we haven’t given anyone a fair chance to develop lead ership within himself. Each time he tried to express his opinions or suggestions, we laughed at him, told him he was “nuts” and “razzed” until he couldn’t stand it anymore but still we “razzed” until we killed all his spirit and am bition to become a leader. But if he could “take it’ ’ we called him a “show off,” and “razzed” him about trying to get in good with the employees until he did quit trying to get ahead. A jealous pride within ourselves has developed. We hate to think of anyone’s being better then ourselves, or having attention giving him. We try to steal the attention by razzing him or criti cizing him bitterly and saying, “oh, he love it,” and such trash. Many of the students here are bashful or backward and “razzing will do them much barm. “Razzing” is much more harmful in a school of this type than one would suspect be cause it stops the promotion of leadership. To create leadership we must stop this razzing. The seniorsand juniors’ supposedly being leaders anyway, should lead the entire group in a cam paign against “razzing. ’ ’ It will be appreciated by the students here now and others in years to fol low, if these upperclassmen accept this challenge. —S tanley W illiams “Smile and the world smiles with you!” What a grand motto to follow. For smiles help to build friendships, and friendships are firm foundations for the future. You must have friendships before you consider your plans for the future complete. And who hasn’t a plan for his future? So remem ber, you must smile, if you are to make friend ships, or to have the world smile with you. Learn to greet everybody with a cheerful and sincere smile. Don’t show people your “grouch iness,” if you feel pessimistic. Give them the impression that life holds only happiness for you. And say, when you know sorrow is in the heart of another, even the tiniest smile can render much understanding and happiness to them, if that smile is sincere. So smile to one and all. Doesn’t it give you a feeling of well being, if you pass someone, and that someone smiles at you? Yes, and even though you may not know or care for that particular “someone,” don’t you think it helps him on his way, if you return that smile? Yes, it will. Show your good qualities with a sparkling smile to everyone journeying on Life’s Highway. Remember, that when you are gone, all of those whom you befriended, will always carry those memories of your happy, inspiring smile. You will be remembered by the things you have done. If you have a smile to greet everybody, you can be assured that you will leave a memory all your friends will cherish. Your smile helps to make life just a wee bit more pleasant for those about you, as well as for yourself.—M argaret S kahan Memories of School Days! ...
