— .......... - - t _ . ..... , , — From the Vocational Departments A uto M echanics : Walter Mesplie has been grinding the valves of a Government V-8. Stan ly Wilder has finished changing the engine of an automobile. H ome M echanics : These girls are nearly fin ished with the furniture of the practice cottage. Nellie Walters has been making initials of Myrtle wood, while thé others are making cedar chests. C arpentry : Most of the carpenters have been making Christmas presents. Ben Bearchum has finished a large book case for the hospital. The myrtle wood extension table for Mr. Henderson has been finished. E lectric S hop : The electricians have installed another light in the Barber shop. The arranging of lights for the Christmas Pageant in the Audi torium has been completed. B akery : The boys, in addition to general pro duction, are learning the fundamentals of ingre dients used in mixing dough, such as wheat flour, salt, and shortening. Tests have been taken by the baker students. By this, much more know ledge of baking was acquired. T ailor S hop : All of the tailors cut and sewed the name CHEMAWA, on the varsity basketball suits, and PAPOOSE, on the second team suits. The new boys who are now working on pants are doing fine. M achine S hop : The machinists have been moving some of the machinery out and sending it to the commissary. Chuck Sams says he is a “ conscientious objector” to work. P aint S hop : The painters are painting Wi nona hall and the Practice cottage furniture. Foreman Robert Charles and his gang will soon start painting the interior of Mr. Showlter’s office. They will soon repaper the ceiling of the library. B arbee S hop : The barbers have had much practice lately in cutting pompadours, since the boys have been in getting “ Bunny Bennett Spe- ials” . In their spare time they have been studying correct ways to give shampoos, massages, and shaving from the Barber Science books. S hoe S hop : The boys have finished putting leather on the seats in the school bus. Scoop! Yellowmule works in Jim ’s Shoe Shop in Salem and is getting along fine. Cobblers want more work, for shoe repairing has slackened lately. G irls V ocations : The sophomore clothing girls are making serge dresses for themselves. They have completed the dresses for the smaller girls. The girls have also been working on Christ mas stockings. The junior girls in the clothing class are work ing very diligently on the smaller girls’ rain caps to finish them before vacation. They are doing nice work In knitting, and are fairly well along with knit blouses. Several of the girls have started making unlined serge suits for themselves. The Junior Home Management class is mak ing the plans for furnishing the new practice house living room. They have selected some pieces of furniture which must be remodeled. The girls who are now in the Junior practice cottage are Paulette Peone, and Eva Queapama. The sophomore class of Child Care and Health have started studying child care problems. The Senior Home Economics girls last week made a every nice selection of wall paper for the kitchen, workroom, and bedroom of the new prac tice house. The girls in the Junior Productive Sewing class have finished making garments for the McBride hall girls. The freshman class completed 600 sheets for Winona hall, and other buildings. All of the Home Economics Foods classes are making popcorn balls for the students for Christ mas. The sophomore class in cooking is making cookies for the Christmas holidays. The Senior cooking class has been studying about meat; the variouscutsof meats, how to pre pare them, and food value of meat. This class is also busy baking very temptingcookies and dain ties for Christmas. The 9C and 10C Arts and Craft classes are still at work on their cross-stitch work, mostly pillow tops and dresser scarfs for which they made their own designs. The girls are making two scarfs apiece, one of which they will keep, and the other they will turn in to the department. The 10C have finished their attractive Christ mas cards, which was one of their class projects. This class has received the beads and buckskin which the girls will work with next. The freshman sewing girls have started on out- ing flannel pajamas. They are also making nice Christmas gifts. In the Sophomore Child Care class, Dr. Faxon came over and they had a round table discussion on personal health problems. The Freshman Foods girls have been making all kinds of griddle cakes. After Christmas they will start on egg cookery.
