From the Vocational Departments E lectric S hop : The electricians have been rewiring new apartments in Brewer and McBride Hall. The only old students who returned to the shop are Chester Paul and Sammy Danzuka. L aundry : The Laundry classes are getting good training in ironing, mangling, and in oper ating the washing machines, besides learning to fold linens, shirts, and other articles properly. P lumbing S hop : Buckets for the kitchen and Grade school building are being made by two of the plumbers. Casters are being put on four of the kitchen tables by the N. Y. A. McNary hall showers have been overhauled and new pipes and valves have been installed. B arber S hop : The Barber shop is opened five days a week during the morning and Mr.Thatcher is there all day Tuesdays and Thursdays. Melvin Woundedeye is the only old student back of the six who work in the Barber shop. A rts —C raft : The Freshmen and Sophomore girls, directed by Mrs. Pepper, are making a study of costume design, and have made draw ings of the different types of dresses pertaining to the five art principles—balance, rhythm pro portion, emphasis, and harmony. The Freshmen girls’ have started oral reports and demonstrations on personal grooming. The Sophomore girls’ have studied the “ Art of the North W est,” and are now making original designs for scarfs and neckerchiefs to be applied in various ways. Two problems each class has are ( l ) the show case exhibit of “ Art Principles of Interest to the public,” and (2) the appearence of the bulletin board. M achine S hop : The machine shop has recent ly finished making iron tools forthe drawing room, playground equipment for playgrounds at Brewer and McBride Hall, and welding lugs on manhole covers to keep them from slippinig out of place. Farm mechanic boys have finished their first six projects of blacksmithing. The morning division finished making window bars for the power house. C ommercial : The two commercial classes, the Senior class and the Special class, are doing fine work. The Senior has learned to read and write shorthand very nicely. In typing, they have cov ered the keyboard of the typewriter. The advan ced class students have the opportunity to prac tice their work in the office, and are getting good practical experience. C arpentry : The carpenters have been very busy repairing and making furniture for the different campus buildings. A mailbox contain ing twenty compartments was made for the Main Office. A towel cupboard was made for the girls in the Gymnasium. Broom cupboards were made for the school buildings. B akery : All the bakers are new in the bakery this year. Mr.- Pepper, who is new at Chemawa, is progressing rapidly with his bakers. Bast week they made 1,800cookies, 100 raisin pies, 10 pans of applesauce cake, 600 cUp cakes, and 844 loaves of bread. C lothing : Miss Sadongie’s Freshman classes have started their problems in clothing, and are working on undergarments. F ood : The Senior Food girls are working on menus for luncheons with the price lists for each menu. They have been making reports from the health standpoint on “ The Value of Foods.” The Sophomore girls are learning to cook lunch eons, and have been preparing soups. Before start ing the study of luncheons, they learned to do various kinds of canning, as all of the Food clas ses had done. The Freshmen Foods girls are making a study of the value of fruits in the diet, and have been preparing and serving different kinds of fruit. They have also prepared and served complete breakfasts. H ome M anagmen T: The Junior Home Man agement class studying problems in connection with housekeeping and food cost. The first two girls to live in the Junior practice cottage are Kathryn Jones and Cecelia Charley. They will move in on Monday, the 21 st , and live in the practice cottage for two weeks. K itchen : There are eight girls taking quan tity cooking at the present time, and they work from 8:30 to 12:00 in the morning, and from 3:30 to 5:30 in the afternoon. There are special duties assigned to each girl, and they rotate these dut ies in order that the work is not too monotonous. C hild C are and H ealth : In Mrs. Cronk’s Child Care and Health class, the Sophomore girls have been studying health habits, and have cho sen as their health problem, “ Posture.” As part **
