The CHEMAWA AMERICAN 4 HOLLOWEEN CELEBRATED WITH A HARD TIME DANCE OCT. 31 T he faculty members and stud en ts of Chemawa celebrated H ollow een by a t tending the “ H a rd T im e ” dance given in the gym on S atu rd ay n ig h t, O ctober 31. T he gym was decorated to brin g out the spirit of Holloween w ith a ceiling of pum pkins, w itches and cats. C ornstalks were in every corner and on th e stage were lighted pum pkins, th e center of attractio n . T h e Serenaders had a counter w here cider and do u g h n u ts b ro u g h t m uch en joym ent. T his m usic gro u p exhibited th e ir readiness to perform by m arching and singing “ M usketeers!” T h e dance started w ith th e grand m arch. As th e stu d en ts were m arching a com m ittee was ju d g in g th eir costum es. T h e following won prizes: Ira M artin and his p a rtn e r, A gnes T horpe, won first prizes: Simeon Bean and Lillian H anberry, second; A lfred Songret and B ertha Blakeslee, th ird ; G eorge Bost w ick and his ever faith fu l partn er, V ivian McLeod won fourth prize. " All of the stud en ts enjoyed this even in g of fun and pronounced it one of the best of th e year. Winona Hall T h e officers of .W inona H all gave a buffet supper at th e Practice H ouse N ov em ber 6. A fter th e supper a f e w games were played and H e n ry Abbot and M r. Jack- son displayed a few trick s th a t k ept th e crow d interested. T h e group was also honored and entertained by tw o talented singers, W alter Mesplie a n d M argaret A ndrew s. A m ong th e guests of th e evening were M r. and Mrs. Jackson, Miss Sam anski, Miss Hoffman and M r. W ilder. T h e b u f fet supper was enjoyed by everyone there. T he V ikings in tu rn defeated th e R edskins by the overw helm ing score of tw enty to nothing, b ut figures m eant n o th in g to the W arriors who were out after a scalp. T he game started prom ptly at 8:00 P.M . T h e R edskins c h o s^ to receive. On th e opening kickoff, G erald Sm ith took the ball on his own ten and ran it back to C hem aw a’s forty-five. T h e Indians then began a determ ined m arch down the field th a t netted them five first downs. T hey were stopped on the Camas five yard line. O n a pair o f double reverses', G igler, Camas left half, brought the ball from his own five to the Chem aw a forty five yard line. T he game from th en on to th e half was hard fought, although Che m aw a th reatened the Cam as go al, the ball was on the Camas five yard line w hen the gu n w ent off. T h e second half was ju st a few m in utes old w hen the W ashingtonians cap- tilized on a break, scored th eir first to u ch dow n. T h e try for point was good. T his seemed only to m ake the Indians fight th a t m uch harder, for on t h e second kickoff, M att A dam s m ade the longest ru n of the season, w hen he dashed eighty yards for a touchdow n. T h e ex tra point was good. T his ended the scoring for th e th ird quarter. T h e clim ax of the gam e came in the final q u a rte r w hen Camas m ade th e ir last to u ch d o w n . T he try for ex tra point fail ed. T h e W arriors then began to get hot w ith S m ith and A dam s sp ark in g th e off ense. T he R edskins tallied twice, b ut failed to m ake one extra, point. T h e fin al score read Chemawa 19 - Camas 13. LEBANON'S UNDEFEATED ELEVEN BEATEN BY FIGHTING INDIANS T h e Chem aw a In d ian s ran wild on O ctober 23, to hand Coach Reed C la rk ’s B errypickers th eir first defeat of th e sea son, 20 to 0. T he braves, lead by H alfback G erald Sm ith, scored in th e first three quarters. ‘ S m ith y ,’ who consistently tore th ro u g h the L ebanon line for long gains, dashed 40 yards on a spinner play for the first touchdow n, in the opening period arid added the second w ith a five yard line plunge in the second quarter. A dam s, rig h t half, scooted around left end on a reverse from Sm ith to ru n 18 yards for th e b ra v e ’s final touchdow n in the th ird period. Sanderville, rig h t end, m ade good -two out of three place kicks for the e x tra point. T he defeat ended th e hopes of Lebanon, w hich last week defeated Covallis, 7 to 0, for a clean season slate. T he In dians gained a, 13 to 0 lead in the first half w hen Saluskin w ent over on a line buck and Adams dashed 45 yards to pay dirt. G eorge ‘F le tc h e r’ C hristian ‘G a b le ,’- burly, lad from Poplar, M ontana, did one of those rare th in g s when he rushed th ro u g h the line to succeed in recovering a blocked p u n t behind the goal line for one of Chem aw a’s scores. H is team m ates said he “ h u n ” on to it like a package of “ pem m ican” from the reservation. New Addition To Staff Mr. A. J. O ’R ielly, a Salem m an is a new and welcome addition to the C he mawa staff upon th e resignation of Mr. Carl T u rn e r. Mr. O ’R ielly is a g raduate of S outh D akota S tate College and was for ten years C ounty A griculture A gent in Idaho and W yom ing. H e has had a num ber of years of teaching experience for he was at one tim e a mem ber of th e O regon S tate College staff as assistant S tate Club leader and supervisor of schools in th e F u g e n e district. Mr. O ’R ielly had charge of th e canning oper ations here d u rin g th e sum m er.
