Newspaper Page TextP age 3 T he CHEMAWA AMERICAN VOCATIONS 22 BARBER SHOP On the 6th of April was our instructor’s 65 anniver sary. In order to bring back nostalgia, the barbers celebrated with an old time dance which must have made Mr. Hall slightly weep. Thomas Parker will graduate on the 18th of this month. See us in action on the 14th at Chapel. ELECTRIC shop The electricans are being kept pretty busy these days. The cylinder press motor in the print shop has been overhauled and the Johnson’s quarters will be wired this week. COOKING DEPARTMENT We have no unusual happenings this week. With a diminished crew, the rest of us have been "carrying on” as before. SHOE SHOP The shoe and harness repairers and general shop groups are very busy in preparing a 100 sets of harness which will be shipped to the Tulalip Indian reserva tion in the near future. There have been 340 pairs of shoes repaired during the month of March. Business is undoubtedly pick ing for "bad souls” are pouring in rapidly this month. CARPENTER SHOP Sam Shoulderblade has completed a very beautiful myrtle wood extension table for Mr. Sanders. The general shop boys are becoming thoroughly conversant in the art of box building, a great many of which are required to ship the harness that is being overhauled in the shoe shop. BEAUTY PARLOR The beauty culture class have been very busy pre- aring themselves for the state examinations which will be given this month. Marion Mercier was called home to help her mother with the home work because of the severe burns sus tained by her recently. Her father was also a victim of the accident. We are sorry Marion will not be with us the rest of the school term. GOOD SHOES FOB HEALTH Correctly shod feet are a tremendous asset in main taining good health, and it has been proved again and again that cheap, shoddy shoes can quickly play havoc with the comfort and health of the wearer. Good economy demands that you, consumers, insist upon properly constructed, correctly fitted shoes which can be properly repaired. Trade-marked shoes of known quality produced by reputable manufacturers usually may be depended upon to give satisfactory wear and service. Whatever the type of shoe, McKay, Welt, littleway, turn or cemented, it can be rebuilt by means of the latest and most up-to-date shoe repair machinery equipment. Every one knows that properly repaired shoes are more comfortable than new ones. Rebuilt with qual ity materials by expert craftsman they will give three to six months additional wear at small cost. The smart housewife ransacks her closet periodically and brings or sends to her neighborhood repair shop the worn, shapeless shoes which accumulate every two or three months. And presto! The change seems magic. For a fraction of the cost of the same number of new shoes. She has footwear for the family which has all the comfort of old shoes with the appearance and wear ing capacity of new ones. Proper care of new or repaired shoes should not be neglected. The repair shop proprietor is usually well qualified to advise regarding proper cleaners and pol ishes for all kinds of shoe leathers and fabrics, and how they should be applied. Trees are very important in preserving the shape of the shoes when not being worn, and they should be needed particularly when shoes are removed from the feet in damp condition. It is also well to remember that two pairs of shoes worn alternately will last more than twice as long as one pair worn every day. Many shoes brought into repair shops are horrible examples of just how shoddy a shoe can be. Every possible part has a cheap substitute. Even the uppers are made of the cheapest kind of leather. Needless to say such shoes cannot be rebuilt, and considering their detrimental effect on the health of the wearer, they are a costly investment in the end. The shoe that will not live long enough to be worth repairing is never worth buying, one gets what he pays for in this as in any other product. IT SEEMS TO ME by I ma N utt That with the new grass coming up we should all be more careful about cutting across the lawns. That the several incinerators and trash cans scattered over the campus are the proper receptacles for waste paper. That with vacation only five weeks off we should alj put renewed interest in our studies so that we may be proud of the grades sent home. That spring is really here since we saw the glass eyes of McNary Hall get the once over.
