CHEMAWA BEATS MYRTLE CREEK TWICE
Chemawa 28. Myrtle Creek 24
On February 15th the braves met Myrtle Creek, a
team of hoopsters from southern Oregon. On their
southern jaunt a couple weeks ago this team gave the
braves all the trouble they wanted, the braves barely
winning by the score of 28 to 29. This team played
a two game series here and the first game was a remi­
niscent of the first game played on Myrtle Creek’s
home floor. The Creek quint was a hard checking out­
fit and the braves were in danger of being overtaken
in the second half of the fray.
The first half was fast with the braves scoring 20 of
their 28 points. In the second half both teams check­
ed very closely but the opponents were able to close
up the gap and were still hot when the game ended.
Trask, of Myrtle Creek, was outstanding in the tilt,
playing a brilliant game throughout. Shoulderblade
was high scorer for the braves and he also played a
good game. The starting line-up included: Sander -
ville, center; LaBreche and Sam Shoulderblade, for­
wards and Archambeau and Adams, guards.
In a preliminary which proved more interesting than
the main event “The International Club” of Willam­
ette University was defeated by our “B” team. It
was a thriller from start to finish and had all the spec­
tators gasping for breath. It was fast and each team
took their turn making points to the end of the game.
When just one breath remained Roy Track made a
precarious shot which turned the tables and made the
“League of Nations” very “disgustipated. ”
The following night Chemawa was again victorious,
defeating Myrtle Creek 24 to 29.
Chemawa loses to Silverton, 17 to 14
In a game with Silverton last Friday, Feb. 22nd,
the braves lost as usual one of those well-known close
games to the music of three bars behind by 17 to 14.
These two teams were vieing for honors to see which
would represent Marion county in the district tourna­
ment. It was a splendid show and the score indicates
that there was decidedly close checking on the part of
both teams.
In the first quarter both teams were pretty near des­
titute of points, however, Shoulderblade started the
works and the Silver Foxes followed with a goal mak-
the score rest at 2 to 2 at the end of the first period.
In the second period the Silvertonians garnered a few
points to lead at half by the score of 11 to 5. The
second half was a mad scramble and very close check­
ing played part of the show. In this period both teams
left very few opportunités for set-ups and we were
three bars behind in the overture, to the favor of Sil­
verton. The final score being 17 to 14.
In a preliminary game our “B” team were also good
showmen and lost to the score of 24 to 22.
SILVERTON STAGES RALLY TO WIN COUNTY
CHAMPIONSHIP FROM CHEMAWA
With a rally that astonished the spectators, the Sil­
vertonians defeated the copper color lads in an over­
time period here, Feb. 25, to cop the Marion county
championship. It was an exciting and close checking
affair and both teams missed very few set-ups. The
Silver Foxes earned the game and deserved it hearted­
ly for demonstrating that “fight to the finish” spirit.
From the start it was apparent that the braves were
going places and led at the half, 18 to 8. Early in
the second half they still were hitting the hoop and
lead 24 to 12 at the end of the third period. In the
last stanza the Silver Foxes started a rally and sank
field goals from all points. Three consecutive field
goals by Sawyer of Silverton and others by his team­
mates made the score 25 to 26. With but half a min­
ute left a foul was made to the advantage of Silverton
and the score was tied. Before this period ended,
Shoulderblade and LaBreche were removed on fouls.
This being the critical moment it caused the braves to
lose their effectiveness. Two pocket sized edition sub­
stitutes were rushed in the game and the time was too
limited for the braves to gather their wits after losing
their regular forwards. In the over-time Sawyer, of
Silverton was open for two short field goals which he
both sank.
Shoulderblade of the braves was the most aggressive
man on floor and led both teams in individual scoring
with 10 points. This lad was open for many shots
but kept dishing the ball to his teammates for better
shots and is a lad who seldom takes a worthless shot.
A new edition who recently flashed in the lime­
light is Alfred “Pep” Pepion. A cool headed slend­
er lad, he is the latest asset to the regualar line-up.
He demonstrated some expert ball handling to hold
second honors with 7 point.
The line-up included Labreche and Shoulderblade,
forwards; Pepion, center; Adams and Archambeau,
guards. The lads played good ball but the Silverton­
ians made some beautiful field goals which were hard
for any team to stop and for which the Silver Foxes
deserve credit.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The girls’ student council have decided to meet more
often and regularly to discuss happenings of the week
and other matters to be brought up. The set date for
these meetings is every Sunday evening after chapel.
