P age 4 T he CHEMAWA AMERICAN BASKETBALL Silverton Wins by Small Margin The annual basketball thriller between Silverton high school and Chemawa, Feb. 14, was by no means a let-down from those of past seasons. The game was exceedingly fast and until the final whistle neither team was a winner. In the final minutes or even seconds of play, the Silver Foxes forged into a one-basket lead and held it for the remaining seconds. The high point honor went to Sam Shoulderblade with 13 counters. The final score was 28-26. Redskins Lose to Astoria Playing tough breaks and without their regular cen ter, Chemawa lost to Astoria high at Astoria, Feb. 17. Walter Majhor, who sprained his ankle in the Silver- ton game, was not able to make the trip. The score was 39-19. and worse, Salem beating Silverton. With all handi caps laid away the rooters never let up for one moment, though our boys were trailing behind. Prospects for victory looked bad at the start, score being 10-4 the first quarter and 16-9 at half time. In the second half a rally was started by Captain Ike Shoulderblade which was never let down by our boys. The third period being 23-16. In the last few minutes and seconds of play the score was tied which had every body standing on their toes. Zundle, who seemed off the first half, shot the winning goal, the final score be ing 28-26 in our favor. Majhor who missed previous games on account of injuries, played a whale of a game defensively and was the main cog in recovering the ball under the basket. John Blacketer and Spot ted Eagle didn’t do much service in other games but showed up like veterans and did much toward the massacre. Ike was score king with 12 points and Zundle with 8 pointers. Ike and Spotted Eagle play ed their last game here. The Salem B team beat Chemawa B 35-14. Silverton Overwhelms Indians In a return game at Silverton, Feb. 23, Silverton high took the Redmen into camp by the desisive mar gin of 40-6. The passing and the shooting of the Silver Foxes seemed to be too much for the locals to get around and Silverton made points almost at will. In the second half Chemawa’s star guard, Ike Shoulder- blade, went out on fouls. This coupled with the fact that his brother Sam suffered a sprained ankle late in the second quarter served to dishearten the rest of the Chemawa team and their game fell below standard for the second half. In the preliminary fracas the Silver- ton reserves won from Chemawas’ B team 17-11. Matmen Lose In Tough Tussle The stranglers are again hitting the mat with Jim mie Rosario as their manager. They had their first match with Salem High on February 24, in Salem. The bout was taken by Salem, as fourteen of our men are green-horns. We hope to make a better showing at the next grapple. The boys revealed marvelous possibilities and we have high hopes of being well rep resented in the tournament. CHEMAWA SCALPS SALEM In one of the best thrillers of the season here last night Chemawa defeated Salem in a fast and grueling game. Chemawa who had but one out of ten chances of winning with two of their regular varsity men on the cripple and sick list, forgot their cares and played with what material they had. The student body held slim chances for our team, due to the terrific drubbing given them by Silverton, GIRLS TAKE TWO GAMES On Feb. 17, Misses Hoffman and Wentzel took the girls’ varsity team to Monmouth for a basketball game. During the first part of the game the score was even and then our girls steadily drew away from their foes. The final score was 28-17 in favor of Chemawa. The following Tuesday, Feb. 21, Monmouth played a return game at Chemawa. The Indian girls proved superior again by defeating the Monmouth team 29-19. BASKETBALL SCHEDULE 1933 Dec. Dec. Dec.
