I CHEM AWA^AMERIC AN Printed at Chemawa, Oregon, and Devoted to the Interests of Indian Education VOL. XXXIV WEDNESDAY, MAR. 29, 1933 SUPT. RYAN ADDRESSES ROTARIANS At the Salem Rotary club meet ing of March 15 Supt. Ryan gave a brief talk regarding the work of the school. He stressed the neces sity of Salem business men coop erating with Chemawa in securing employment for our vocational graduates. He stated that the future of the school depended on the ability of the school authorities to place the students in occupations so they would not have to return to reservations where opportunities were megre. The girls’ sextet, composed of Marie LaFrance, Dora LaFrance, Aletta Goodbird, Alice Bachman, Melba Arnoux and Alice Slater, presented a pleasing musical program. OLDER BOYS’ CONFERENCE The annual older boys’ conference of the Y. M. C. A. of Marion and Polk counties was held in Salem on March 24 and 25. The Chemawa delegates were Louis Pitt, George Lucei and Wesley Larsen. At a banquet on the evening of the 24, at which the con ference was formally begun, speeches were given by speakers of each locality. Wesley Larsen was speak er for Chemawa. He was also secretary of the con ference. The main objective of the conference was to improve the individual by self-conducted habit im provement. A well-coached and gifted cast of young actors kept the audience interested and mystified throughout the evening. Although we, with the country detective (ably portrayed by Leroy Grenier), thought that now and then “we were beginning to get somewhere” in unraveling the mystery, the denoue ment was entirely a surprise to the audience—and to the detective. Every character was well depicted. The seniors and Miss White, who directed the play, have every reason to feel proud of their efforts. The house was packed with Chemawa people and many citizens from Salem. Financially the outcome was al so very gratifying. Musical numbers between acts were furnished by the boys’ dance band and several other musical groups. The cast of characters follows: Josiah Harshman, ill-tempered, wealthy__ Howard Churchill Gilbert Barnes, Josiah’s nephew_____________ Vincent Pratt Otis Wendell, self-esteeming detective________ Leroy Grenier Dr. Hall, the coroner-------------------------------------- Harold Berys Adam Hill, Josiah’s manservant______________ Oscar Braden Norman Clayton, reporter; Gilbert’s fiance____ Melba Arnoux Hannah Blodge, Josiah’s housekeeper______ Marie LaFrance Esther Raines, a gossiping neighbor________ Sophia Powakee Mary Andrews, household drudge___________ Esther Hillman
