CHEM AWA« AMERICAN Printed at Chemawa, Oregon, and Devoted to the Interests of Indian Education Vol. XXXIII Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1931 THE SOURCE OF POWER Chemawa can point with pride to quite a consider able number of graduates and ex-students, men and women, who, by persistent effort, have raised them selves to positions above the average in their chosen line of w’ork. Some may ask by what means have they achieved this success? We wish at the outset to hazard a guess that good character is the secret of their success. Hence the leading purpose of all people, young or old, should be the possession of a good character. Many people think that the mere possession of mon ey means success—that rich men’s sons and daugh ters alone can trod the road of success. If one keeps his eyes open he will soon see the fallacy of this idea, for it is far from the truth. Many of the poor boys of our country have made of themselves the best and no blest of men. Let us emphasize the fact that our students may be come wealthy or they may never acquire riches, in ei ther event they can do more real good in the world by their virtues than by any money they may possess. Their studies in school, their reading, their aim in life, should all work towards the grand object of acquiring genuine manhood and womanhood which is founded alone on the elements of character, without which there can be no true success. Character is power. No. 3 The three highest rating companies, one from each hall for the month, will have the privilege of entertain ing their friends at a dancing party, or of going to a movie, or of visiting places of interest in near-by towns.
