Normal School. Mr. Robt. H. Knox of Gresham, Oregon, paid Che mawa a visit during the recent holidays. He is a former Indian Service employe now retired. Shoemakers repaired 425 pairs of shoes during the month of November. When you consider that two shoes make a pair, this was quite a goodly number of “kickers.” Miss Earlougher spent her Christmas in San Fran cisco, Calif. Mr. Kirk made a trip to Portland Monday on gov ernment business. Miss Peters passed the recent holidays with friends near Tacoma, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Larsen and daughter, Miss Vivian, and Mr. Silas Moon passed New Years with friends at the Siletz Agency. After having passed the holidays with his parents at Neah Bay, Wash., Charles DePoe is back again to resume his studies at Willamette University. Coquelle Thompson returned to his studies at O. S. A., Corvallis, on Monday after having passed the holi days here. He is now a senior at the college. Word has been received of the death of Richard O’Brien of tuberculosis at the sanatorium at Galen, Montana, on Dec. 24. He graduated at Chemawa three or four years ago. Mr. Burton Crary, of Salem, was the principal speaker at our local Y. M. meeting last Sunday even ing and brought our young men many good and new thoughts. Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Sandberg and daughter of Reedsport, Oregon, passed the holidays as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Larsen at Chemawa. They returned home last Friday. It should not be necessary to admonish our students to give heed to the words of advice uttered by Supt. Lipps during chapel last Sunday evening. Remember, what he said was not idle talk. Miss Edna Groves, Supervisor of Home Economics in the Indian Service, arrived at Chemawa last week in an official capacity. The long service of Miss Groves has given her a large list of friends at Chemawa and she is always a most welcome visitor. The students enjoyed a good movie last Saturday evening—“The Silent Enemy. ” This is truly a re markable production— no white characters in it and it was two years in the making in the wilds of Canada. One of the delightful events of our holidays was a luncheon served by Mrs. Ryan to a group of friends w’ho gathered at her home on the afternoon of Decem ber 28th. In every respect it proved a memorable affair—dainty and with a “homey” atmosphere. Mrs. Hattie Eaton, formerly head clerk here and for many years in the service, gave joy to her old Che mawa friends by passing the week-end here w’hile en route from Idaho to Los Angeles where she will pass the winter. The Y. W. had their regular meeting last Sunday. There was no special program so there were many favorite hymns sung. A letter was received from Miss Ecpert, who is National Secratary of the Interior Department. She had written of her trip in Europe. There were also greeting cards sent from old Y. W. members wThom we all enjoyed hearing from. Mrs. Henrietta K. Burton of our field service, and in co-operation with the extension service of O. S. C., spent a day at Chemawa last week conferring with Supt. Lipps on matters of importance to this district. She is both likeable and able and has no illusions re garding her wmrk. We are in receipt of a card from Mr. G. Wilder Fort, a Chemawa employe but now in Raleigh, N. Car olina. Mr. Fort especially desires that we extend his Christmas greeting to Supt. and Mrs. Lipps and all employes here with whom he is acquainted. He wishes joy and good health to all and expressed the the wish that he were here in the fold for the Yule tide season.
