Newspaper Page TextPage 4 The CHEM A WA AMERICAN Last Friday afternoon Woodburn high gave us the first licking of the season. The final count was 10 to 7. Right off the reel Woodburn’s batsmen found Al exander for four solid swats and made as many runs. Among them a single, two doubles and a trippie. Such a start would weaken most pitchers, but Joe Al exander, who bids fair to be our pitching ace for the season, calmly picked his course and in a little while things did not look so bad. His teammates buckled up and gave him good support in the field and at bat. With a six-run lead to overcome they forced a run across the plate in the third inning and managed to score in each inning after that up to the seventh, when they had closed the gap to a 9 to 7 count. Consider able improvement is noticed in the team over the game with Silverton. The hitting, even against better pitch ing, is much better. Joe struck out five Woodburn hitters while Reed and Owing fanned three Redmen. Chemawa made 13 hits against 8 for Woodburn. On Saturday Parrish was defeated here. The final count was Chemawa 11 Parrish 2. Peter Seltice took the mound for us this time and held the visitors score less and hitless up to the sixth inning when DeJardin cut lose with a double, but Peter tightened up and allowed nothing more until the ninth inning, when, with an entire new team behind him, Parrish rounded up two hits and two runs. In the seventh inning Leonard Vivette connected for a pretty drive out past left field and a home run. In the eighth Uriah Alexander repeated the performance for the second homer of the game. These two boys are leading our batters in the manner mentioned. In three games Leonard is maintaining an average almost .700 and Uriah .550. On Tuesday the team played at Silverton and to morrow it will go to Gervais to tackle the team that is considered by many as the strongest team in the league. In the class league the seniors defeated the eighth graders 6 to 2. This week the juniors will play the sophomores. Saturday Coach Sanders and four or five of his track men will make their annual trip to Vancouver. Just who the boys will be the coach is not able to state. The weather has been so bad that outdoor work has been impossible. However, the final try-outs will be held early this week. Frank Dumont, George Little- Light, William Brown, Louis Baker, Albert Miller, Andrew Whiterock and Howard Churchill are the most likely to replace the team of Oliver, Wall, Little- Light and Frenier who won the race for us last year. Sometime soon the inter-class track and field meet is to take place. No question but this is the proper time for the meet instead of at the close of the term. Generally there are a few real athletes uncovered we never know of until it is too late.
