George Meachem , heaved the shot a distance of 46 feet 3.5 inches. Ernest Brunoe also shaved a little off the school record. John Frenier continued to live up to his early season prediction that he was going to win all his races, by capturing the half mile. John had to lower the state high school record to do it and was hard pressed throughout but a beautiful sprint at the end of a thrill ing race was to John’s advantage/j He finished in the excertional time of 2 minutes and 4.4 seconds. James Oliver grabbed third place in the 220 yard dash. Last Thursday and Friday our baseball team suffered defeat at the hands of West Lynn 6 to 3 and then to Oregon City 9 to 5. Joe Alexander formed the battery against West Lynn and held them pretty much in check except during the fourth inning when West Lynn bunched seven hits and chased in four runs. Joe struck out ten batters and allowed 15 hits while Fox for West Lynn is credited with twelve strike-outs and allowed nine hits. Al Goudy took the mound for us against Oregon City and, like Joe, managed very well except for one bad inning. In the fifth with a two out and a good advantage over the batter an error occurred and a hit was made and the^parade around the bases was started. Oregon City would not be stopped till they had chased in five runs. Except for those two bad innings our pitchers worked a fine, heady game. Both are “mix ing them up” nicely and have developed good con trol. Against West Lynn Joe Alexander did not allow one free pass to pass first though he got into some pretty tight places. Against Oregon City Al Goudy allowed three walks which is a very good record. How’ever Al gets himself into hot water pretty often and finds it difficult to work his wTay out. Roy Mea cham caught both of these games and did a good job of both. Roy holds up the pitchers like a veteran and has the “life” and “chatter” that are such big assets to good catchers. Roy is developing a nice, quick throw to the bases and is a good batter. Because of his short, stocky build pitchers find him difficult to pitch to and he usually draws a walk or makes a hit. He is our lead-off man. Philip Corbet should also develop into a hitter. Philip bats left hand and takes an effective position at the plate that denotes nothing but confidence. He played his first game against Oregon City and just at the right time came through with a nice clean hit. He started to catch this spring but because of his batting will probably be switched to the outfield. As yet there is much chang ing about and switching positions in our squad to find a workable nine. Eldred George and Alonzo Hoover have been put in every position on the team but they are now back in their original positions. Hoover started in the field then went to first and then caught a little but he is back at his starting point to bolster up that department both in hitting and fielding. But it is likely he will play first when Alexander is pitch ing. Joe will probably play first when Al Goudy is taking his turn in the box. Our line-up is probably the strongest this way. Roy Meachem, catcher ; Joe Alexander, pitcher; Alonzo Hoover, first base; Donald Hatch, second base; James McKay, third base; Eldred George, short stop; Mar cus Simmons, left field; Roy Peratrovich, center field; Philip Corbet, right field.
