Eipps, Mrs. Smith, Miss Flora Dexter and Miss Vivian Earsen, of Chemawa, and Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Thomas and daughter of'Salem, were in attendance at the con cert played by our string quartet last Monday evening. . A letter , recently received by Supt. Eippsfrom Miss Vera Korter conveys the information that the writer is in the -Indian service at the Mekusukey Academy in Oklahoma in the capacity of boys’ matron. Miss Korter reports that she is getting along nicely. She was a member of our graduating class of last year. : In a recent issue qf the Seattle Times there appeared a dispatch from Mount Vernon, Wash., that should be a source of pride and • inspiration for our Itìdihn students. Read this: ’ Nellie Joe, a fourteen-year-old Jnciiam .girl, ,.isvno\y t,he new couxity gra/Je sc^o9l,sPirU_ ing champion. She won this honor here Saturday in the finals of the annual contest from a field of twelve éandidates and as a result will^represent this | county in the state meet at Olympia*, in June. The new champion is a student at the EaConner grade school. A recent issue of The Portland Oregonian contains thè announcement of the fact that Chester E. McCarty, for many years connected with, that paper, has entered into a partnership with the law firm of Eiljequist, Rauch & Swanton, Portland attorneys. This is well, but further interest centers in the fact that Mr/ McCar ty is the husband of one of Chemawa’s most outstand ing students, who préVi^ìPftF her marriage was Miss Julia Gromoff. During her student days’ here she was in every way a source of pride to all of us and it is most pleasing to note the successes that are coming to her and her worthy husband. Verne Wilson arrived home last Friday evening from a trip to Spokane, Wash., where he had been repre7 senting the Salem High School as a niember of the violin section of the. great student orchestra assembled there to give a concert. Verne says that there were more than 200 performers iti the orchestra and the program went oyer in fine style. The frank and able talk given our students by Supt. Eipps during the chapel hour last Sunday evening should prove of value to them, and we believe that such a series of clear, able and straight-forward talks must in the very nature of things bear fruit. H ow can it be otherwise? It is often the case that good advice falls on deaf ears, but equally as often there are some who listen, and hear, and are benefittedv and so we befieveif is in ChemaWa circles. ' W ethifik Mr. Eipps is doing more good than he realizes. In addition to the able address of our Superintendent Clyde Cooley ren dered a ’cello solo and the Orchestra and choir each contributed numbers. JU N IO R DECLAMATION CONTEST The junior vocationals staged a declamation con test last Friday evening which was in everyway creditable to all concerned. At the proper moment Miss White made some announcements and introduced thp judges.of the contests, Messrs.. CqmpbeU, Rey- ndlds and Gardiner, all from the public speaking de- partment of Willamette University. They did their difficult task to the satisfaction of all | and we thank them.
