They were form erly trained chiefly at the hospice of St. Bernard in Switzerland. These dogs are trained to go out during die storms, with a flask, and aid lost travelers. I Bloodhounds are probably the stock from which all English hounds have been derived. They have been employed since the time of the Romans for hunting jn d tracking humans. The substance of which diamonds are principally composed is carbon crystallized in the esometric system. ‘ Besides as jewelry, diamonds are used for cutting and faceting diamonds and other precious stones, for putting glass and porcelain and drilling in dentistry» . In a Greek, legend, the “ Amazons” were a nation of war-like women. The traditions in their country in regard to men was, “ That no man should dwell with in their country other than in subjection for the con tinuance of the race. ’ ’ The customs and pursuits of the Amazons were: “ They were strong and hardy in Body, brave, and liked to hunt and go to w ar.” Two famous women pirates were Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Eor a time they were both on the same «hip. Anne Bonny disguised herself as a man, and accompanied her husband as a member of the crew of a British privateersman. Mary Read joined the crew, and consequently the two women were thrown togeth er a great deal. They became friends. The pirate chief was called “ Blackbeard” because of the strange »lises to which he put his long black beard. Stories tell <is that he wore the beard tied behind his eyes. Others say that when he went into battle he lit small fuses in th e ends of the beard to make himself look ferocious. Caruso had a tenor voice. The deepest woman’s voice is known as a contralto voice. - New York is knqwn as the Empire State, because it leads the states in population, manufactures, commerce and wealth. It has held this rank fo,r nearly a,century. Jts emblem is the rose and its motto “ Excelsior.” New York state’s oldest institution of higher educa tion is Columbia University in New York City, which is the outgrowth of King’s College, the charter of which Was granted in 1754 by King George II. Vitamines are a group of substances of unknown composition that exist in minute quantities in the nat ural food stuffs. They are essential to the normal physical growth and nutrition of mankind and some animals. They are most abundant in outer coverings and the germs of grains; also in fruits and vegetables. They are also present in milk, btittef, meat, and eggs, When Christ was born in Jerusalem K h à Herod ordered all the infant children killed so that thenewly- born Christ would not be king. That was called the Massacre of the Infants. The greatest days of massacre during the French Revolution were the 2, 3, 4, 5 of September in 1792, when 10,000 persons were put to death in the prisons of Paris by the order of Danton. OEEICER’S CODE The commissioned officers, of the boys’ and girls’ battalion held a meeting in the “ Wigwam,” Eeb. 13, 1929. President Eldred George, took charge of the entire meeting. The “ students’ creed” was read by George Meachem, the officers’ code read by Cleo Plas- teur, and Mr. Kipps made a very interesting and in spiring talk concerning the officers’ code and the things pertaining to the general welfare of the school. After which the officers’ code was approved by our acting principal, Miss White. Mr. Bent, Mr. Downie and Mrs. Brickell all gave a few remarks dealing with the significance and the true value of the code. The following is the officers’ code: My personal honor and the higher w elfare of Chemawa shall be my guide in all my acts as an officer; all students under my orders shall receive the same fair, im partial and ju st consider ation and treatm en t, regardless of my personal likes or dislikes; the follow ing shall be an inviolable rule w ith me: T h at my sense of self-respect shall not suffer and th a t I may carry w ith me the inw ard satisfaction w hich follows righteous conduct. T his shall be my code, and by it I shall stand, reg ard less of official authority or lack of it. My honor is my code. Before adjournment, however, every one was invited to the Wigwam by Mrs. Brickell, where refreshments were served by the Senior girls and were heartily devoured by every one.
