Cannon, S u p e rin te n d en t of Schools of M ultnom ah County, sta tin g th a t th e B oard of C ontrol had unanim ously voted us perm ission to join th e association on th e sam e footing as o th er h ig h schools. To all w ho are in te rested in th e fu tu re w elfare of our athletes, th is is very gratifying. T he stan d ard s set by th e state associ ation are fair an d ju st a n d we w ill have a b e tte r bran d of a th letics by living up to them . It is with considerable pride that we announce that Chemawa has just been unanimously elected a member of the Oregon High School Association. This calls to mind a remark made by Superintendent Eipps about a year ago, at the annual football banquet, that he thought it about time Chemawa applied for admittance in the High School Athletic Association where it rightfully belonged and where our teams would have some degree of dignity about them. At the time the goal seemed a long way off and one only to be hoped for but never to be attained. However the seed was sown and our ap plication made. Then followed a long period of anx ious waiting, and, needless to say, we have been much concerned about the outcome. Late last week Mr. Carroll, our assistant superintendent and principal, was officially notified by the High School Board of Control that Chemawa was admitted. To our students, and others as well, our admission into this association means much. It means our boys and girls will have a new field to explore, new ideals and standards to maintain, and that their perfection in athletics will have an added value. However, there are strict rules that govern the action of the members of this association like there are that govern any successful organization, or institution, and there are times when we are apt to feel the effect of those rules, but the value received will far surpass the price to be paid. Functioning in every department like a veteran organization our team defeated West Eynn high last Friday before its Home Coming crowd 23 to 0. Three touchdowns, three converted tries for extra points, and a safty, accounts for our score. Alfred Bernard, Clifford Meachem, George Mea- chem, Ernest Brunoe and James Oliver, all seniors and playing their last game for Chemawa, turned in a real afternoon’s work. Bernard not only kept the defense guessing with his well-planned attack, but was one of the star ball-carriers for Chemawa. From punt formation he dashed through the weak side of the line, with Brunoe and George Meachem paving the way, for repeated gains from five to thirty-five yards. Clifford Meachem played the best game of his career. In fullback position he figured prominently in every play. He took the ball through the line and off tackle for consistent yardage and was repeatedly tackled after faking into the line. Needless to say, his faking was realistic, as it would have to be in order to be tackled for the ball carrier. A twenty-yard pass and a twenty- yard run made and completed by the Meachem brothers accounted for our first touchdown. Clifford was on the passing end of our three extra points. Two of them were completed by Warren Wilder and the other by Eldred George. His punting was an added feature. They were not only well directed but averaged 35 yards per boot. Our linemen were like dynamite in West Eynn’s attacks. Captain Roy Peratrovich and Ernest Brunoe, tackles; Joe Peratrovich and Isaac Curley, guards; Eldred George, center; George Meachem and Joe Alexander, ends; were through the enemy line and smearing things up in general all afternoon and not even one first down from scrimmage did they allow during the entire game. On the offense their work was just as effective and our backs went crashing through their openings with speed and power. A latteral pass off of a forward pass was the feature play of the game. From James Oliver to Eldred George to George Meachem the ball darted through the air and repeatedly ended up in Meachem’s arms and carried for big yardage. It is a spectacular play and the crowd called for it again and again and it never failed to work. Tomorrow the big tussle of the season will be played right here on the home field. The class All-Stars will match their wits as well as their strength against the “ Hot Shots,” and what a game it will be! There will be sixty minutes just chuck full of fight and action. While the bets are about even, or pie for pie, some are inclined to give the “ Stars” a very slight advantage. Fee Wilson, the “ Hot Shot” mentor, is somewhat nervous and reluctantly announced his line-up: All-Stars “ Hot Shots” M u ll e r ..................... Meachem Basketball is already claiming the attention of many and before the week is over all will be converted into basketball instead of football players. Class teams are all organized and several games have been played. For the next two weeks they will be doing their best to fur nish the material for our first team.
