W ith but one m an from th e squad of last season presen t for practice, and w ith but seven days to ro u n d in to shape, o u r m ole-skinners p u t up a real battle against th e P o rtlan d h ig h school cham ps and h eld them scoreless th ro u g h th e first h a lf. In th e second W ashington’s backfield broke into th e open for th ree lo n g ru n s, an d each one ended in a touchdow n. T he follow ing Saturday our team w ent back to P o rtlan d and tu rn e d in a w in over th e boys from Benson Tech. Benson started th e gam e w ith speed and pow er an d scored early in th e second q u arter after our receiver j u g g led a p u n t th a t th e y recovered an d tu rn e d into a score. At th e end of th e half th e score was 6 to 0 against us. O ur fight in g sp irit dom inated Benson in the th ird and fourth quarters and a forw ard pass after a criss-cross from Toe A lexander to George M eachem tied th e score. O ur second touchdow n, came as the re su lt of playing heads-up football. O ur linem en w ent for w ard after a p u n t an d a terrific tackle caused a Benson ball carrier to fum ble an d Joe A lexander scooped it up a nd raced 25 yards for our second score. In this gam e our team showed m uch “ fig h t“ and “ will to d o ,“ w hich was largely responsible for th is w ell-earned victory. T he final score was Chemawa 12, Benson 6. On Septem ber 29 M edford h ig h , th rice sta te cham pions, trounced us 39 to 6. W e say trounced because it is in keeping w ith the score, no t because th e gam e was so one-sided. At half tim e the score stood 13 to 6 and our eleven was going stro n g and even looked superior, b u t suddenly our back field collapsed and allow ed them selves to be passed over and 'after a couple of successful ones our linem en m ade th e g la r in g m istake of dropping back to reinforce against passes and th e resu lt was th a t M edford, in th e last quarter, ran and passed alm ost at w ill. Two w eeks later we w ent into th e A lbany gam e very m uch crip p led and th e contest resu lted in a 6 to 6 tie. On a half dozen occasions our team carried th e ball alm ost for the le n g th of the field, only to lose it on downs or by a fum ble in th e scoring zone. F rancis Ross, speedy rig h t half, had a big day an d broke away for several lo n g ru n s. H is inability to dodge and reverse th e field k ep t him from scoring on each of these p re tty ru n s. A lbany’s score came in th e last q u arter after we w ere penalized for tack lin g a fair catch. T he penal ty p u t th e ball w ith in tw elve inches of th e goal line, w hich of course, should no t have been, a n d On th e fourth attem p t A lbany squeezed th e ball over. T h at is th e re su lt of the gam es played so far. O nly five letterm en from la st year rep o rted and to fill the seven vacant places can hard ly be done in one or two seasons, or m aybe th ree, for except our first eleven m en all are ju st youngsters who have not h ad the experience of “ k id ’’ foot ball. But w ith w illing bands the team is slowly rounding in to an eleven th a t resem bles a football team . Daily th e squad develops more of the “ w ill to do” and possibly before th e season is over they will tu rn in a good account of them selves. George M eachem is the only veteran end playing th a t position. F ld re d George, his ru n n in g m ate last year, has been sw itched to center to take care of th a t im portant post. Joe A lexander is our o ther representative at end. Joe is b ra n d new and inexperienced, but is a determ ined w orker. So far our ends have not done any sh in in g w ork, but since th e first gam es are in th e past and they have had a touch of the real stuff, we hope to see th e w ork of th e ends stand out. Our tackles have begun to find them selves. Captain Roy Peratrovich and E rn e st Brunoe have been a pillar of stre n g th on th e defense, but a little slow in blocking on th e offense. F riday at A lbany they looked re a l effective. Joe Peratrovich and Isaac Curley, guards, also show signs of com ing along. T his m arks C urley’s first year and so far he has h eld th e edge because of his size, b u t is going to be h a rd pressed by a young fellow w ho is also in a football suit for th e first tim e, b u t he certainly does not look nor feel out of place, and th a t boy is Jo h n W hitegrass. J o h n ’s big asset lies in his ability to follow th e ball and g et th ro u g h th e line. H ow ever, th e speed of th is young fellow m ight m ean th e w aking up of our husky guard, who sm acked ’em plenty at A lbany. Isaac also is â little slow in pu llin g out a n d finding his place in th e in te r ference and then doing business after he gets there. F ld re d George is playing a good gam e defensively at center. Ju st y et he is having trouble keeping the ball off the g round on his passes in p u n t form ation, but considering th is is his first attem p t he is doing w ell, r TT ~ f ' Tulian Sm ith is our quarterback. Ju lian is a chap of about seventeen snows and is tak in g his first fling at th e gam e, ThoUgh “ Buck” is som ew hat slow on his feet he w ill be re a lly effective if he can develop a little speed, for hé has not m ade m any m istakes in the choice of his plays. O ur backfield is composed of F rancis Ross, half back; Clif ford M eachem , fullback; Jam es O liver, halfback; and W arren W ilder, halfback; they round out our list of ball carriers, and all are playing th e ir first year as regulars. T heir inability to dodge, pivot, and reverse the field has been th eir hindrance in g e ttin g across the goal line So far th is fall. They are th ro u g h an d away repeatedly, but have not been able to elude th e sec ondary defense. A gainst Albany Ross broke loose no,less th a n six tim es for long dUsheS, but was finally checked because he was not elusive. However, we expect to see m ore of th a t kin d of football from our ball toters from now on. So far this season we have had but one hom e gam e an d th a t one was against F ran k lin h ig h ’s second team w ith our sec ond team. O ur youngsters held the m uch heavier F ra n k lin boys to a 20 to 0 score until the last quarter, w hen F ran k lin in tercepted a pass for a touchdown and raced around th e end for a 70-yard ru n for another. F ast w eek the W illam ette fresh men played here. W ith three regulars out and no replace m ents w ith any size or experience our team w ent into th e gam e woefully weak. Clifford M eachem is still out and a lte r nate, P eter McClusky, is not able to play. G eorge Meachem is still hobbling about w ith a sprained ankle and F rancis Ross is out indefinitely w ith an in ju re d foot. H ow ever, a team w ith a fighting h e a rt and determ ination is h a rd to lick, so th e green cappers had b etter not look for too easy a gam e. A ju n io r and senior football league has been organized an d th a t takes care of alm ost every boy who w ants to g et in to th e gam e, an d to date several good gam es have been played. W ith th e football league a n d the gym nasium in operation everyone com es in for plen ty of exercise. So far the juniors defeated th e seniors 6 to 0, th e sophom ores tram pled over th e freshm en 13 to 0, and the seventh graders w hitew ashed the eight g ra d e rs 13 to 0.
