Both teams displayed a brand of passing and basketshooting that would be hard to equal anywhere. Swift passes, coupled with accurate shooting, enabled our team to lead the visitors in the first half 18 to 9. However, the Portlanders were outpassed but very little. Where they encountered their difficulty was in breaking through our defense. Our team plays the five-man defense and playsit effectively. Early in the second half the club team took a sudden spurt and by making several long shots all but closed up the gap that separated the two teams. It was at this point that the battle became the hottest. And it was also here that Eldred George and Dewey Matt, both forwards, were forced to leave the game because of personal fouls. For a moment it seemed that our team had passed out of the picture. But soon a new combination started working and they made their pres ence felt. Peter Rassmussen and Charles George were changed from the guard to the forward positions and Roy Peratrovich and Jack Abraham went in at guards. With DePoe still at center these five stemmed the tide and managed to hold a two-point lead over the visitors till the final five seconds of play when one of the club men converted a long field goal from the center of the floor and tied the score. The five minute overtime period was well worth the price of admission itself. There was too much excite ment for words. It was one of those rare games and it was long after the game was over before the noise of the battle died away. Our team had won by the nar row margin of a single point—30 to 29. The work of Captain DePoe, Peter Rassmussen and Charles George deserves special mention. It might be said that these fellows played a “whale” of a game. They played throughout the whole contest and their work was splendid. It might also be said here that we do not like to see any one have to leave the game because of personal fouls. Every player knows his limitations and can avoid fouling. It should be borne in mind that “un Good morning, folks! We are very busy cutting patterns for woolen dresses that we are going to make; and by looking at the styles chosen you will find them very clever. Although some of the patterns have been originated here they are all Parisian styles. We are also completing fancy work and pleated skirts started by the other division of Sophies. With us are some of the Freshie girls, who are busily engaged in the making of clothes for small children, bother Guiney, a popular and the smallest member of our class, is the practice leader for this week. Although she is small she is doing very nicely in handling her work with the fifth and sixth grade girls. LOCAL The plumbing force has just completed a number of unusually artistic flower baskets—“dreams,” we would call them. Early last week Mrs. Turney and her boys and girls’ octettes put on a program in the evening at the First Methodist Church in Salem. The program and its rendition was praised by all. The electricians have been busy of late installing new lights in various sections of our campus. These outside lights not only make it easier to get around the grounds at night, but they also increase the beauty of the scene immeasurable. Peter Rassmussen is working in the blacksmith shop at the task of making some very fine lamp brackets. They are reported to be of English design and it is said that the work is very fine. They are for the domestic science department. Dr. Collard during the past three or four weeks has operated on about 150 of our boys and girls for the removal of their tonsils and every case has proved suc cessful. Who dares say this is not a fine record? Mr. Huskey, our chicken raiser, has his incubators going night and day and ere long a large number of chicks are destined to burst forth from the shell to as sume the battles of the chicken world. Mr. Huskey is busy getting everything in tip-top shape for the hatches soon to come. The boys and girls of the various vocational depart ments of the school, and the academic department, too, have recently completed a very fine exhibit for presen tation before the National Educational Association in Washington, D. C. We are told that the exhibit has already been sent to Washington and that it is in every way creditable to our great school.
