ACADEMIC NOTES
Since the home building essays are written and mailed
the students are getting down to the serious business
of preparing for the finals.
The exhibit cards that have been turned in to the
principal’s office so far this year show unusual ability
and care in their preparation. The third grade have
used their construction period to prepare a number of
very attractive cards.
The seniors seem to go over the top 100 percent
strong each Friday morning at current event period.
In one of their recent recitations they gave the latest
news of everything from King George to radio. One
or two, unable to get “ talked out” on one subject, gave
several concise items covering a number of subjects
of general importance.
A number of students have had an opportunity to
try out as teachers this winter during the time some
of the teachers were unable to be on duty on account
of illness. There is an old saying that teachers are
born, not made. When we discover girls in the fifth
and sixth grades who can control forty or more young
questioners, and instruct them intelligently, and boys
and girls in every grade of the vocational departments
who are eager to volunteer for service, it would seem
that there may be some truth in the old saying. Al­
though this experience is good training for our young
people, much credit is due the boys and girls who have
so cheerfully helped over the hard places this winter.
For the first time since the school at Chemawa was
organized the Daughters of the American Revolution
have this year included our school in the number to
which prizes are to be awarded to the pupils receiving
the highest averages in United States History. In
order to arouse a deeper interest in the study of Amer­
ican history, and thereby instill a deeper love for our
country, theChemeketa Chapter of this splendid or­
ganization has extended to students of the vocational
division the privilege of competing for a gold medal,
the prize to be awarded to the student in this depart­
ment receiving the highest rating in history. The
prevocational student receiving the highest rating in
this study will be awarded a silver medal. If arrange­
ments can be made to this effect the medals will be
presented at the Jolly-Up by some member of the
Chemeketa Chapter.
‘SENIOK NOTES
Are we anxious to see the senior annual? Guess!
We are reviewing a little of our English. We have
written two themes so far.
Frank Johnson leads the class honor roll with Roy
Courville coming in second. These last few weeks
will tell the tale.
The geometry still has its twists and turns, but we
master it just the same. We are now studying about
circles and polygons.
Every one seems to realize what they are going to
leave when they graduate, so we are all taking the
best advantage of our opportunities.
In the evenings you can see the seniors wending
their various ways to the school auditorium for their
operetta practice. “ Mum” is the pass-word.
Since we’ve had our table at the south end of the
dining hall the class seems to be somewhat like a
large family. Every one seems happy and cheerful at
every meal.
When Wednesdays come around and we do not go
to assembly we have a feeling that we’ve missed some­
thing. We really enjoyed the assemblies with the
helpful talks by the teachers.
The class of ’23 are all working like a colony of
beavers. There is so little time with so much to be
done that there is really no time for loafing. Still we
find lots of fun in doing our work.
It seems our reporter has gone to sleep on his job.
Maybe spring fever! Some-one must have stuck him
with a pin as our news items are in the Chemawa
American this week. Let’s have them every week.
When the photographer from Salem came to take
some inside pictures last week he found seniors every­
where. In the choir, the class-room, laboratory, even
at the library, not mentioning the various industrial
departments.
We seniors are all interested in botany since the
spring flowers have come up. If you see one of us
digging after some lowly little weed do not be alarm­
ed as we use them for our herbariums. But that isn’t
all. You should see our school books. Besides our
press-books you can find flowers in both geometry and
English books. Everything seems to go along pretty
nicely when there are flowers around.
ALUM NI AND EX-STUDENT NOTES
Alex Melovidov, second violinist of the Chemawa
Indian String Quartet, is now the bandmaster at Has­
kell Institute.
A recent letter from Silas Moon, now at Glenwood,
Oregon, states that he is planning on making us a
visit during commencement week.
Chester Bravo, who was a first-class shoe repairer
while a student here, now has a shop of his own at
Smith River, California, and has all the trade he can
handle.
Invitations were sent out last week to members of
the alumni association to attend the commencement
exercises which are to be held from May 27 to
June 2nd.
Gordon Hobucket, class of 1908, is writing for the
date for our commencement exercises. No time was
lost in a reply. We can hardly feature the exercises
without Gordon.
