O n account of the state basketball to u rn am e n t in Salem it was im possible to secure th e usual ju d g es from am ong th e Salem H ig h School teachers and Miss C hristensen, high school teacher, and M r. Sw enson, editor of the M on m o u th H erald , both from M onm outh, O regon, and Mrs. W addell, of Y akim a acted. F irst place was aw arded to F ran k Jo h n so n , of the ten th grade; second to Robert C ham berlain eight grade, and Clara H am ilto n , n in th grade, the th ird place. Especial m ention was made of H arry F ro st, n in th grade, and C arrie A nderson, ten th grad e. All did so well th a t the judges stated it was a difficult m atter to ren d er a decision. T h is is a very im p o rtan t featu re of the academ ic w ork at C hem aw a. T h e pre-vocational contest takes place April 13th. Prizes will be p re sented at th e “ Jo lly -u p ” at th e close of C om m ence m ent week. VARSITY LOSES CLOSE MATCH By the narrow m arg in of tw o p o in ts the Benson P olytechnical School of P o rtlan d defeated our m at men here last F rid ay n ig h t 26 to 24. T h e m atch was easily the m ost sensational one we have w itnessed th is season. T h o u g h o u r w restlers w ere outw eighed in every m atch they took on th eir oppo n en ts w ithout protest and m ade a show ing th a t w as m ost g ra tify in g to us all, for th e Benson neck- tw isters enco u n tered a great deal of difficulty h a n d lin g o u r g rap p lers and won th e bulk of th e ir p o in ts by way of th e decision ro u te. Of the seven m atches Benson won tw o decisions, one by default, and th e th ird by a fall w hich cam e even after the gong had ran g b u t was aw arded b y the referee. T h e m atch betw een Critn and L auder from Benson, was th e deciding m atch of th e to u rn am en t. H av in g lost one fall and w inning one decision, itlo o k - ed m uch like an o th er decision for Crim and the m atch for o u r team for Crim had th e best of the m atch for th e first five m inutes w hen his hold slipped and he rolled in to a fall. E arl D onnelly, A lex P etelin and G uy Scott, our stu rd y little bone cru sh ers, flopped and tu m b led th e ir opponents about th e m at w ith lig h tn in g speed, p in n in g th e ir shoulders to the m at tw o tim es han d r u n n in g before any one could say scat. T h o u g h K arabelnikoff, Sam uels and H anson did n o t throw th eir m en, they them selves were not throw n and deserve m uch praise for th e creditable show ing they m ade. T h is closes ou r w restling season. CHEMAWA BOY SCOUTS W e num ber 110 stro n g , rep resen tin g 38 different tribes and ten states. T h e com ing week we are scheduled to have a C ourt of H onor, w here tw enty- four Second Class Scouts and tw enty five T enderfoot Scouts will be aw arded th e ir m erit badges. Several m em bers of the Salem Council of the Salem Scouts w ith w hich we are affiliated will be present as m em bers of the C ourt of H onor. W . K . L ast week was a busy one, for the S co u ts’ test began early in the day and ended in the evening— boxing the com pass, kn o t ty in g , first aid to th e in ju red , sig n alling, track in g , cooking. H ere we give a few questions th a t th e S couts of Second Class have to handle: 1. W h a t are th e general directions for first aid to the injured? 2. W hat causes shock? H ow would, you treat? 3. E x p lain and give trea tm en t of sim ple fractu re, com pound fractu re. 4. D em onstrate proper use of T u rn iq u e t. 5. N am e six points on the body w here pressure may be applied to stop arterial bleeding. 6. N am e five antiseptics in com m on use in c lu d in g one w hich is now considered perhaps th e safest and m ost efficient in first aid w ork. 7. Conventional signs, sem aphore code, Morse in te r national code. 8. W hat is the value of O bservation? Efficiency? 9. D em onstrate how to find direction by use of w atch and sun. E dw in L iljegren, a C hem aw a boy a tte n d in g the Salem H igh School in his senior year, plays guard on the crack high school basketball team an d is considered one of th e best in th e state. U pon his entrance upon th e floor of the S tate A rm ory p reparatory to the big gam e l>etween Salem and the U niversity H igh of E u gene, the o th er day at the state T o u rn am en t, th e e n tire audience of 2,000 fans stood up and cheered for “ L ily .” E dw in is a good u p stan d in g boy, w hatever wav you m ay take him .
