Excelsior Societies Reception McBride Hall Girls to Friends in Gym (Addie)“ Oka, do you find Benjamin Franklin in teresting?” (Oka) “ No, it gets pretty dry, and sometimes I al most choke.” W e’re having circles in our “ plain” geometry now, and find it not so bad as we thought. In botany we are taking up “ stems” and we find that they are necessary to the plant in many ways. The Senior class, with Mr. and Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Brickell and Virginia, enjoyed a jolly evening given by our teacher, Mrs. Risser. We had a ’very dainty and attractive lunch which was served in the Do mestic Science after our play last Friday evening. One event we shall never forget as a class. Not only those whose names appeared as actors were responsible for the production of “ Her Husband’s Wife.” The entire class of ’23 was busy. Oka Paul ina, Minnie Patawa and William Minthorne were on the advertising committee; Frank Johnson, curtain man; Anna EaRance, prompter; Alex Beauvais, Stella Ridley and Carney French were on the committee for stage properties; Cecelia Smith was business manager and was assisted by Robert Johnson who also looked after the tickets and programs; John Pesterkoff, our musician, rendered the wonderful music. The coach reports that every man was reliably on the job every minute. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28 th . ACADEMIC NOTES . - . - - Sports in Gym 2:00 P. M. Chemawa Boy Scouts Vs. Salem Boy Scouts A visit to the laboratory during any school day is always a deep satisfaction to those who enjoy seeing pupils industriously and intelligently working. The pupils of the primary department are to have the pleasure of making the decorations for the hospital Christmas trees. The little folks hailed the opportun ity with real delight as it gives them a chance to do useful work in sharing Christmas with others less for tunate. The period assigned for construction and seat work will be used for this purpose. When a boy walks six miles to school these frosty mornings, and cheerfully remarks that “ I t ’s all right” and that he “ needs the exercise,” we conclude that he needs the education, that he knows he needs it, and is determined to have it. When all Chemawa boys get this spirit the teachers will have the Christmas gift that Miss Gunn urged the students to present to them. On Thursday four members of the 9th grade, B di vision lined up in battle array over the dead body of Julius Csesar. Anna Dee Thomas and Roderick Hill contested in reciting the speech of Brutus; Rose Seeds and Ernest Hill contended for highest rating in reciting the Antony speech. Each contestant did well. And the judges felt inclined to award a decision in favor of each one, but a final checking of ballots gave the decision to the Hill brothers. 8:00 P. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30 th . Costume Party 7:00 P. M. •»44»» SEN IO R NOTES We see we have some good actors as well as good orators in the class, as was proved by the play that was given. We are glad that our play is over with so that we can get down to real business. We regret that it is gone forever though. A senior boy tried to commit suicide the other day by falling into the swamp, but quickly decided he wanted to stay with his class. We plan on breaking all diplomatic relations with the hospital soon, and recalling our number of am bassadors who have in turn represented us there for some time.
