David S. T u rn e r, head ag ric u ltu rist, is tak in g his vacation, after a year of stren u o u s w ork in success fully h an d lin g our large ag ricu ltu ral and h o rticu ltu ral requ irem en ts. Mr. and M rs. Bradley and fam ily are located in one of th e cottages i n “ H a ll’s A d d itio n .” T h ey will te m porarily be one of C hem aw a’s fam ilies. M r. B radley is g iv in g his atten tio n to m aking u p lists of m aterials for the new D orm itory. Rev. M r. L o n g of th e first P resb y terian C hurch a d dressed th e jo in t m eeting of th e Y .M .C .A . and Y .W . C .A . societies last S unday evening. M r. L ong is a stro n g speaker an d certainly know s how to talk to y o u n g people. H is address was fine in every wav. Mr. H a rry W . Cam p, au d ito r for th e In d ian Service, dropped in on T h u rsd ay last for an official visit. Mr. Cam p is an indefatigable w orker and very valuable in ex p lain in g erro rs in the accounts and assisting our force follow ing th e regulations. H e has visited C he m aw a a num ber of tim es and each visit has taken no little in terest in our school activities. T h e em broidered sm ocks ju st finished by the d o m estic art d epartm ent for th e g irls ’ com pany C of W i nona H all, and worn to chapel on Sunday evening, are, in th e opinion of th e w riter, about th e prettiest uniform s th a t the C hem aw a girls have had for a long tim e. I t would be very effective if all of o u r girl com panies had them or som ething sim ilar. O ne of the best talks of this year was given by S u p t. H all last S unday evening in chapel. It was on p racti cal lines, as are all of his addresses, and was given w ith conviction— a fine talk for all present. D uring th e excercises the orchestra played by request the F e s t’’m arch of P e rfe c t, a m ixed chorus sa n g “ T h an k s- g iv in g ” bv Pleyel, O ka P aulina recited “ P a trio tism ” and th e choir sang an anthem e n title d “ E x to l Y e the L o rd ” by Shaw ker. I t was a well spent evening. M r. Iliff, who has had t o spend a good deal of his tim e at various lum ber mills inspecting lum ber for PA G E 3 m any of th e superin ten d en cies of th e Indian service th is fall, has about com pleted th e w ork in hand and is gratified now to tu rn his full atten tio n to school duties at C hem aw a, w hich are at all tim es u rg en t and press in g . H is large class and dem onstration room w hich adjoins the office of the S u p erin ten d en t of In d u stries is being cleared of th e various shop ex h ib its and m e chanical draw ing desks p u t in their place. V arious classes of th e bovs will im m ediately be given the course in m echanical d raw in g by Mr. Iliff. E very em ployee and pupil of Chem aw a can be class ed as p a rt of a b uilding gang, and w ith his or h er own w ork to do, th e ir part of th e stru c tu re to be accounted for. T h e g an g m ust w ork to gether on a definite plan, or we shall have little of an y th in g at the end of th e day to show for our most indu strio u s efforts. T here m ust not be one sh irk er, one loafer, one slacker in the w hole g ang. I t is for ourselves th a t we m ust build, and the sons of C hem aw a, our w hole service, our In d ian people. W e m ust build bodies and m inds and ideals and moral ch aracter. W e m ust go to ou r w ork hum bly and th o u g h tfu lly , w ith earnestness, w ill ingness, d o in g ou r p art well and proud of th e p art we play. T h e w riter has observed recently, th a t som e of our stu d en ts do not use th eir brains. T h ere seem s to be lack of co n cen tratio n on the w ork in hand. F or in stance, recently a boy undertook to loosen a n u t w ith a w rench th a t was bent so th a t it w ould not hold properly. H e w orked, stru g g le d , and finally narrow ly missed b e ing h u rt because he did not «top long enough to h it the w rench w ith a ham m er and stra ig h te n it so it w ould hold. M oral: Use your head some and you w on’t need your hands so m uch. T h e bov who is described as a w orker, and who is also credited w ith w orking to advantage, and g e ttin g th in g s done, is th e lad that does not expend useless energy on tools th at one blow of the ham m er would m ake th o ro u g h ly serviceable. T H A N K SG IV IN G D A Y SPORTS Bang! Bang! Bang! All are ready for the big day. T h an k sg iv in g Day, and the big gam es. T he first gam e on the list of events will be played, as usual, in the s tu d e n ts ’ d in in g room. S tu d en ts vs. th e big feed. No dope needed on this event. S tu d en ts alw ays lose. All h an d s will slow ly move from th e d in in g hall sm iling and happy but defeated. But from then on the outcom e of events will not be so certain and will be held m ore or less in th e balance till th e very end, as the Seniors and Sophom ores have com bined against the J u n iors and F reshm en and are p ittin g th eir very best to d e fend the honor and d ig n ity of their respective classes. A special program of events has been arran g ed to suit even the most rugged of those w arriors. Will it be a thriller? W ell, we guess it will, for w hat some of these huskies did ju s t about a year ago still lingers in our m em ory and these upper classm en are all hopped-up and ready for the fray, as p reparations for th is day have long been u n d er way. Class songs, class yells an d classsp irit will ru n high th ro u g h o u t the afternoon. T h ere will be school fight and pep a-plenty. A tug-o-w ar th a t gives prom ise to be a real, honest- to-goodness contest will be the first event betw een the four classes.
