ITEMS FROM THE TRADES
T h e blacksm iths and auto m echanics are a busy lot.
T h ey have done some excellent w ork on various m a­
chines and th e forgings tu rn ed out for tlie new pow er
house are a credit to them . T hey are alw avs ready
for an y th in g and w hatever th ey attem p t com es out well.
T h e tim e has come at Chem aw a w hen the fellow
who has no in terest in his w ork is “ o u t of lu c k .”
T h ere are m ote boys th an room in the various shops
and the fellow th at does not care to m ake the most
of his o p p o rtu n ity will find that he has lost th a t op­
p o rtu n ity .
T he tailors and th e shoe and harness d epartm ents
continue to produce the articles of their trades as they
alw ays do. M any com m ents were heard on the excellent
quality of w orkm anship show n by th e display at the
fair. T h is was tru e not only of these d ep artm en ts, but
of all d ep artm en ts.
T h e p lu m b ers, engineers and electricians are doing
their u tm o st to keep up service here and prepare the
new p lan t for service when our oil comes. Some w ork
has to be done by th e railroad com pany to enlarge th e
oil pit at the unloading track before proper connection
of pum ps can be m ade.
T h is fall has been a busy tim e for th e p ain ters as
well as o th er d ep artm en ts. T h ere has been a q u an tity
of work disposed of all over th e cam p u s, inside and
out of b u ild in g s. T h e n ex t job is th e glazing of the
new steel sash placed in the rear of the school b u ilding
on th e second floor and the rep ain tin g of these rooms.
Tw o m ore excellent school room s will be added to the
academ ic d ep artm en t w hen this work is com pleted.
R ecently a visitor to our carp en try d ep artm en t was
heard to inquire, “ w here are all the boys th a t w ork in
th is shop? ” An acco u n tin g of th e stu d e n ts by the
head of th e d ep artm en t showed th a t th ree boys were
rep airin g the floor at th e auditorium , four were reb u ild ­
ing houses at the piggery, three were rep airin g the
floor in the root house, two were w o rk in g on steps for
one of th e porches of a dorm itory. I t seem s rath er odd
som etim es to en ter a d ep artm en t and see no stu d en ts
at work th ere, but in an instance like th e above there is
considerable going on in w hich the stu d en ts are o b tain ­
in g excellent tra in in g .
DOMESTIC ART NOTES
T h e girls of th e dom estic art d ep artm en t are alw ays
glad w hen F rid ay comes, as th at is th e day they do all
their fancy work.
T h e g irls of th e eighth grade in the dom estic art d e ­
p artm e n t are now m aking business cresses for com ­
pany B, w hich are going to be m ade of blue serge.
All the e ig h th g rad e g irls are w earing sm iles, for they
are proud to see th e girls of M cBride H all w earing
the pink, blue and orange dresses. “ S om ething new !”
T h e h em stitch in g m achine in the dom estic art d e p a rt­
m ent is very useful in m aking sheets, pillow slips,
ru n n ers, table clothes and m any other things. But we
are sorry to say th a t it has been out of com m ission
since the ch a n g in g of the m otor.
Mrs. Jam es resigned from Chem aw a, the first of S ept.
And we now have w ith us, Mrs. McAdoo of Salem ,
O regon, who is filling the place of Mrs. Jam es. M rs.
McAdoo attended O. A .C. d u rin g th e sum m er session.
W e k indly welcome her to Chem aw a.
T h e m orning after the class had th e ir lesson on the
H isto ry of the M achine, our teacher, M rs. Canfield,
requested th a t we should w rite notes for th e paper.
W e have begun our fancy w ork day, w hich is on F r i­
day, doing em broidery w ork, in w hich m ost of us are
interested.
T h e seventh grade A division and the eig h th grade
B division girls are m aking blue serge sm ocks for the
little girls of U com pany. T h e little sm ocks are nicely
em broidered w ith red and gold yarn around th e neck
and sleeves, ju s t a plain ru n n in g and cross stitc h , but
it looks very neat. T he smock is finished w ith im ­
itation pockets.
AT THE L IB R A R Y
T he boy scout books are very popular.
Much reference w ork is being done and th ere are
tim es w hen the room is filled to its capacity.
On our shelves will be found all the books of th e
required and supplem entary read in g of th e grades.
M any of the new books w hich were purchased d u r ­
ing the sum m er have been received and are being
read w ith in terest.
T h e girls are becom ing acquainted w ith the L ittle
Colonel and like her. B etty W ales is an o th er. T h e
list grow s w ith reading.
T h e pupils th is fall are show ing th eir appreciation
of the school library by th eir good use of the books and
m agazines to be found th ere.
Miss S tanley relieved M rs. O tis, who retu rn ed to
her hom e. F ailin g health com pelled M rs. O tis to
give up her work in the classroom ; she bad learned to
u n d erstan d and like the sm all folks of the th ird grade
and was relu ctan t to leave them . W e are pleased to
have Miss Stanley w ith us.
Miss Nellie Lamb has assum ed her d u ty as teacher
of the ad u lt prim ary class, relieving Miss C onnolly
who now enrolls th e A division of th e eig h th grade
and a special class in th e se v e n th . M issC onnolly will
be advisor for th e eighth grade stu d en ts. W e welcome
Miss L am b as a m em ber of our faculty. She is an e x ­
perienced and valued te ach e r.
