ous kinds of tim ber.
T h e plum bers have repaired th e w ater m ains in two
places recen tly. T h ey also have m ade good progress
w ith th e show ers in Brew er H all and various toilet
rep airs.
T h e m achinists are w orking on som e tools for th eir
d ep artm en t w hile not busy on repairs for th e shops.
Some very creditable w ork has been done in this de­
p artm e n t recently.
T h e painters are refinishing th e k itchen, d in in g ­
room and several places at the hospital.
T hey
have prom ised to b rig h ten up th e d isc ip lin arian ’s
office. Roy N uckolls is in charge d u rin g the absence
of M r. S anders.
O u r large tru ck is again in service and we are glad
of it. M r. Beebe and his crew used it to good a d ­
v an tag e in finishing the u nloading of wood. W e are
g reatly indebted to the farm ers and gardeners for their
help in h au lin g th e wood from th e siding.
Ju st a w oid to the curious: Y ou know “ C uriosity
killed th e c a t,” so do not let it get you as well. T h is
is p artic u larly em phatic for boys w ho w ork in d e p a rt­
m en ts w here th ere is m achinery and still m ore em ­
p h atic for boys w ho do not w ork in those departm ents,
b u t w ho for som e reason com e in to the departm ents^

from belts and shafts. T h ere is never tim e to stop the
m ach in ery before som eone is h u rt w hen h e g e ts f a s t in
it. If you are too curious to leave th in g s alone stay
o u t of these places.

Miss M ary H elen Fee, of N ew Y ork C ity, arrived
at Chem aw a on S atu rd ay an d en tered on d u ty as one
of o u r force of teachers M onday. Miss F ee was tra n s ­
ferred from th e P h ilip p in e service, w here she held the
position of Division S u p erin ten d e n t. She comes well
recom m ended and will be an ad d itio n to Chem aw a.
M rs. H all addressed th e S tate C onvention of th e
D aughters of the A m erican R evolution, at th e request
of M rs. K eatin g , of P o rtlan d , state regent, in the
house of rep resen tativ es, sta te capitol, last F rid ay ,
se ttin g forth th e scope of th e ed ucational w ork at
C hem aw a. E lean o r H a u k gave a read in g at th e
close of M rs. H a ll’s talk, w hich com pletely captivated
th e large body of rep resen tativ e women of O regon
a n d the N o rth w est.
H onors still keep com ing! Ju lia Grom off, senior
in Salem H ig h , in a recent try -o u t for th e hum orous
speaker to rep resen t the class, was selected in com pe­
titio n w ith a large n um ber of co n testan ts. T h is is
th e th ird of o u r stu d e n ts to carry off first places. In
fact, th e senior class will be rep resen ted en tirely by
C hem aw a stu d e n ts. E lean o r H a u k takes first place
in dram atics and now Ju lia G rom off takes first place
in hum orous. H a ttie M artin rep resen ts th e ju n io rs
in dram atics.
T h e fourth d em onstration d in n er in the dom estic
science was very successfully given by C lara M orais
on W ednesday last.
C lara m ain tain ed th e high
sta n d ard w hich had already been set by the other
seniors in previous d in n ers. T hey have all been so
nearly perfect th at it has not been difficult for the
com m ittee to give good m ark s. T h is last d em o n stra­
tio n on the p art of C lara show ed ab ility and careful
train in g . A g irl w ho can cook and serve such an
ap petizing d in n e r is to be com plim ented.
T h e gym was u n u su ally b eautiful in its a rtistic
decorations at th e W inona p arty on S atu rd ay n ig h t;
th e S ain t P atrick m otif was carried out, and th e a r­
ran g em en ts m ade for th e e n tertain m en t of guests
w ere superb. T h e W inona g irls alw ays en tertain
well and never b etter th a n on th is occasion. I t was
an evening of m uch joy. A n innovation in th e way
of serving the refreshm ents was in tro d u ced . W ooden
tray s, one for each couple, on w hich delicious and
am ple edibles were placed, were handed o u t. I t was
a d elightfu l ev en in g for all who atten d ed . T h ere
were m any u n u su ally pleasing features, and as a
w hole it was one of th e best of the m any good parties
th e W inonas have ever given. V eltha F razier was

and advisor of th e society.
ACADEM IC NOTES
H ave you noticed any black and gold streaks
around th e track?
M ost of the eig h th grade girls have finished th eir
co n stru ctio n dresses.
The class of ’22 is proud of E lm er T h e rria u lt, as he
took second place in th e declam ation contest.
W e ju n io rs find an cien t history very interesting.
W e have ju st finished stu d y in g about G reek civiliza­
tion.
T h e ju n io rs have finished th e classic, “ T h e M er­
ch an t of V en ic e,” and have tu rn e d back to our
E n g lish te x t.
N ine ju n io rs are o u t every m orning for track
practice. T h ey may be seen m ak in g th eir rounds in
evenings also.
W e are all interested in chem istry and are going
over th e second and last lap. T h is will be a great
help in th e com ing exam .
D em onstration d in n ers in terest th e ju n io r boys as
well as th e senior g irls. O ne ju n io r boy gave a
d em o n stratio n d in n er in his room recently.
T h e ju n io rs held th eir reg u lar class m eeting last
F rid a y . So m uch business was transacted it was
necessary to postpone th e program .
T h e e ig h th grade, B division, have finished stu d y ­
in g and o u tlin in g their classic, “ T h e L ady of the
L a k e ,” and all seem ed to have enjoyed it, especially
w hen read by M rs. R isser, who takes o u t all th e
tan g les.
